The Last City In China

The flight from Chongqing to Shanghai was somewhat stressful for tour group members who had developed gastrointestinal difficulties during the last night on the cruise ship (several people required medical attention). Shanghai is situated on the Yangtze delta, and is China's biggest city with 13.5 million people. It is also the biggest seaport as well as the major center of economy, science, technology and culture. Our old, 1934 Broadway Mansions Hotel was situated at the north end of the Wai...

Impressive Shanghai

3/26/2007 Shanghai Wonderful Shanghai! We didn't need a hotel, but we had booked and prepaid for the Shanghai Broadway Mansions Hotel, an old architecture hotel (western architecture from the old days), and the hotel was just 5 minutes from the ship. We had 2 English language statons on the TV, including CCTV 9, a Chinese station broadcasting in English. 3 years ago Ed met Michelle on a Loch Ness tour. She was sitting by herself, so Ed invited her to join him and Loren. Michelle is from Shang...

... buildings of Pudong and have a better view of the Bund. I took about a hundred pictures, since there was nothing else to do.

Just when we were almost back to the port, I noticed a gigantic storm cloud overhead. We went down from the upper dock just as it started to drizzle... and then rain... and then pour. Then the wind started, and the thunder and lightning. It turned out it was so windy that we couldn't dock, so we sat in this ship as it drifted in and out of position to dock ...

I'm in Shanghai and did not get kidnapped. Get it?

... muddy waterfront and that is what it was in the beginning when the first British company opened a office there in 1846. Located on the west bank of a bend (running north and south at this point) in the Huangpu River, the Bund became the site of some of the earliest foreign settlements after Shanghai was opened as one of five "Treaty Ports" in the Treaty of Nanjing that ended the Opium War in 1842 ...

A Shanghai Enema for a day

Pardon the enema reference. I'm sure some found intrigue, rather than concern. That's my peeps! We crammed alot in that day and really fast. He he he.... So, I started out by riding the MAGLEV train which is the fastest train in the world. It utilizes an electromagnetic field to levitate the train and speed it at upwards of 230 MPH. We got from the center of Shanghai to the airport, which is about 30 miles, in 7 minutes. The world was whipping by ...

Day 105 - Props Shopping

... Mong Kok, and went looking for the electronics block. It wasn't hard to find and didn't take us long to find exactly what we were looking for. We didn't have long to browse, but we were sure of what we needed: we both needed external hard drives, and Rachel needed a new memory card and card reader for her digital camera. They were so cheap I thought of getting myself one, but quite honestly if I filled up a whole 2G memory card before I uploaded the pictures, I had other problems ...

Day 104 - Hong Kong

... in Hong Kong, in spite of everything, and in 6 days I¡¦ll be debarking this ship forever. I was up early for the docking as usual, and there was a small crowd on the bow for most of the morning. It took us a long time to dock, and I relished every moment. This would be the last time I ever did this; I knew that when we came back to Hong Kong for debarkation after a few days at sea for closing and exams, I would want to spend every moment I could inside the ship with the people I ...

Day 99 - Fudan Closing Ceremony

... people out, and as it was raining again made our way as quickly as we could in the direction of the buses. We were both more than a little irritated and sick of the day and just wanted to get back. We tried skipping, to cheer ourselves up. It worked a bit and soon were singing songs from musicals we both know. Turns out she knows The Secret Garden - the first person I met on the ship who knew it and I find out now, two weeks from the end of the voyage. So we sang The ...

Circus, Smells, Museums and Going Out

... bar, but cheaper. Beers for 10 yuan. That's about $1.25. We've also had some "interesting" experiences at clubs. One guy inadvertently got a lap dance from a Chinese guy. We thought it was funny. The guy getting the lap dance did not. We also made it to the Chinese circus on Sunday. It was crazy. The clowns doubled as acrobats and did some really cool stuff. They also had lions, tigers and bears. The bears did gymnastics. No joke ...
