Had a wonderful day today. It started off rather early - woke up at 4:20 and could not get back to sleep. Finally gave up at 7am and figured I might as well get ready and head out. Today I ventured out into the Venice Lagoon to visit three of the islands. I purchased a 7 day vaporetto pass earlier this week which includes passage to the islands, so I just needed to find my way to the right vaporetto station in the Castello District and things would be ...

... lost in the maze of the central part of the city. It's easy to get turned around but once we figured out that La Fervovia was the train station we had our bearings. The Basilica is amazing, all the intricate mosaics on the floor and the artwork on the walls are just magnificent...again it all seems surreal. ... the Grand Canal and the smaller neighborhood canals. We constantly were lost in the mazes of homes, some only 3 ft from the next row of town homes, only to wind up back on a canal or a bridge. Constant feast for the eyes. Around every bend, another flower-festooned housefront, another ornately carved bridge arching over a misty canal, another chapel door with wrought handles.
On Sunday night, as we wandered through the mazes of ...

... quick salad at La Tappa on Strada Nova. Don't expect anything here to be cheap, and as soon as you accept that the more you will enjoy yourself! Of course, eating off the beaten track is always cheaper, not cheap, and avoiding San Marco is a must. I decided to have a wander down to the Fondamenta Nova, from whe you get a good view across the lagoon to Murano, of glass blowing fame, and San Michaele, the cemetery island. We are in August and on the way I only ...
