After leaving Venice, we hopped on a train which took us to Innsbruck, Austria. This is in the Tirol area in the south western part of Austria. We stayed the night in Innsbruck, and made our way out to Kaunertal the next morning. Innsbruck was the first place that we were able to catch a glimpse of the Alps! These ones weren't snow covered, because they were not very tall. The closer to the glacier we got the more snow we saw! However, ...

Finally I reach the town of Stelvio which is just like many towns in this neck of the world with very narrow streets making their way between the wonderful painted up buildings.

I turn up right and this is me now on the climb up Stelvio pass. This road up is extremely narrow and must have about 30 or so hairpin bends. With it being so narrow one has to be extremely careful not to go out too far on the ...

Heading south west we drove down a steep twisty pass to the Val Bregaglia and the village of Casaccia ...

... up steep, slippery steps at the side of the waterfall, to walking on open grass-covered mountains. My guide set a pace that meant we could meet the times set by the signposts (times obviously set by taller men and women with longer strides!).

My ever faithful companion Lizzie (who is '84' years old!!) did it all with me and walked twice as far as I did since there were so many incredible smells to explore! We did have one horrendous moment when ...

      Friday 29 August

Stayed around the campsite throughout the morning reading
a good book. A short local walk in the afternoon but managed to catch a bus
that took us right back to our start point rather than taking us further up the
valley side. Gave up in disgust, had a cup of tea and carried on with the good
      book.
