... farming town of Baernzell. Sampled the local schnapps (called Bayernwurz), and enjoyed the local rye bread fresh from the 300 year old brick oven. After indulging in local specialities, we took a horse drawn carriage ride through the beautiful farmland, which was very peaceful.

... to see the scale of the brewery – it’s gigantic. The bottling plant alone was phenomenal, with a capacity of 120,000 bottles per hour. You got to see the historical side of the brewery as well as the new contemporary side –
essentially everything is brewed in the same way, only bigger and better with more robotics and less man power. It’s all about being more efficient and brewing more beer! I suppose ...

Wow, what a morning! The exhibits in the Gäubodenmuseum in Straubing were extraordinary; the Roman objects found buried there in 1950 are amazing! Metal breastplates, knee guards, shin guards, helmets, swords, silver coins etc in perfect condition. The Romans settled here in 70 AD and called the place "Sor-viodurum" The Danube trail is well signposted, we have only lost it several times, mostly entering or leaving a city. ...

Our accommodation along the Danube has varied from private guesthouses to four star Hotels. All have been excellent, great hosts in the Gasthaus to informative staff at the Hotels.
