Drove to Kemi, 20 km east of Swedish border, on the Baltic. What a contrast to when we had camped on the Swedish side of the Baltic in icy conditions on June 17th. Glorious warm sunshine. Probably saw our last reindeer, although roadside signs still warn us to watch out for them. Drove along the sea edge to Oulo and stopped for coffee at the market square on the sea front. Domna's house - lunch at Vartilus border crossing - Korkana Husky Farm 41km

The Husky Farm is a nice sauna spot for farewell. Huskys are calmer than expected. In particuliar the last day showed me I couldn't navigate such sik tour on my own. In part we crossed forest without a trail. It became cold that day and the old snow went ruthlessly sharp. I collected quite some blue marks that day.

Tragedy is that the village experienced diminuation too because the border runs exactly through the lake's island that constitutes the Kulvajärvi village's cemetary. Ancestors can only be visisted on special permission. Some cannot be approached.

There is also a beautiful christian orthodox church of Kulvajärvi . Community is deteriorating due to rural exodus.

... distance for us but doable.

Historically border patrol distances were 25km meaning that every 50km there was a border patrol house, hence the Raate one. It has a tower that shakes quite in the wind with precision field glasses. Bedding is crude but sufficient. The owners helped themselves with a substantial remainder of my Bacardi Rum - but well, who am I not to share...
