On our way to San Diego! Instead of driving through the southern desolate Arizona and California deserts in the 110+ degree heat, we took a detour through "Vegas"...actually Boulder City. Still temps in the hundreds, but better traveled and with a Hoover Dam.

A room that time forgot with shag pile and a massive jacuzzi in the room as well as a separate bathtub in the toilet enclosure. All the better to watch tv from the bubbles apparently. Anyway we rented it by the hour to leave our suitcases as since 911 security is tight ...

... Dam is one of the best engineering feats of all time. The Colorado River, upon which the Hoover Dam is situated, had been a "friend and foe" of the Americans for hundreds of years, with the huge floods creating massive destruction to anything in its path, but it was the most important water source for many Southern states as well. The Hoover Dam was a necessity to harness the water strength and share it safely.
