Desert Bus Ride from Al Khobar(Dammam) to Jeddah

... I am sad to say that my mobile camera could'nt even catch one - they were much too elusive for me ( and maybe the bus went too fast at the wrong time!) A couple of times I even caught sight of a cute camel cum goat farm, but wasnt able to get them on celluloid.

Now I must tell you that after my desert ride I have my own definition for the word 'Mirage'. It is not just an illusion. It is an illusion of something you have seen earlier on in your journey. You may have ...

Homeward bound via Bahrain

17/10
Time to be honest. We're heading home.
The last country is a stop-over in Bahrain (for 2 hours) as we fly through the night back to England
We wanted to surprise a few folks so have sneaked home quietly.

Never the less, Bahrain International Airport looked very nice at midnight, all lit up. This small island state lies in the Persion Gulf alongside saudi ...

And back to Dubai!

Not much - just waiting at the airport for the flight! Bahrain was both nicer and more boring than I thought, the weather is a lot more forgiving but it's not worth more than about 3 days exploration tops.. Unless you like to get really nittygritty :P
Didn't quite get there.. But close enough!

... and also not having any male family members with us [women are not allowed to cross solo, nor are they allowed to drive in Saudi!], we didn't even bother to attempt to cross the real border to go into Damman [although I wanted to..], so Saudi exploration will have to wait until I'm married :P [I have no brothers and my dad would much rather go anywhere else but a hot desert!]
Dubai's laidback cousin

... of Dubai. There were two interesting buildings - the World Trading Centre, which has 3 wind turbines in the middle of it that produce its power, and a pair of buildings I dont remember the name of that's shaped like two quarter-pikes [skate ramps]!

Our driver then took us to some random palace grounds thingy - basically, it's where the king keeps all of his camels. And there were LOADS of the buggers! We got to go in and stroke one of the baby camels, who at 3 ...

Too much to do......

... 8217;t as productive as I’d hoped it would be, but with the key objectives already accomplished, I wasn’t as concerned. Knowing I was interested in local/Saudi food, the admin ordered traditional lamb for the team’s lunch. Again, it was a ton of food with the lamb/rice dish, a cucumber/tomato/dressing salad, yogurt, olives, hummus and bread.

At around 2:30, I was in a ...

... any time during my trip so far. Erwin talked about how he took his daughter to the kiddie-ride amusement park on the top floor.

We walked back to Carrefour but it was still closed (people can continue shopping, but no one can come in or check out). They stopped a few people from coming in, then 20 seconds later started letting people in---we followed. There was what looked like a manager (white shirt and tie) staring at the security guards in a pretty ...

Squash, Anyone?

What a great day!

Slept in an couple hours after the alarm went off, so no time for breakfast and made it down to the lobby just a couple minutes before Saad showed up (the time zone really takes some time getting used to!).

Work: things went much more smoothly today, but still need more consistency to get waste rates down. I was again very impressed with the troubleshooting skills of their engineer. Lunch was dominos pizza with pepsi: pepperoni ...

Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia

Yo, here I am in Al Khobar, one of the 'tree' cities that make up the greater Dammam area. This is my 2nd day in KSA. After spending 1.5 hours on the UAE side and 5 hours on the KSA side, I eventually hit the road yesterday. While waiting, it did cross my mind that I could have been watching the Mens Tennis in Dubai, Federrer & Nadal & co, and staying with my friends in Jumeirah - thanks ...

Delayed- Part 2

... key, opened my door, switched on the lights and started laughing. Holy Cow!! They've given me a suite. Heh, no better way to get stuck in a foreign land with no spare undies than be stuck in a foreign land in a nice suite with all the luxurious tappings. Rolled around in the king sized bed that night and woke up at noon. Since I missed breakfast and lunch is served only after 1, I went exploring instead. Armed with the hotel's name card which doesn't ...
