Sihanouville

... After a night out around our guesthouse we found that we were in the ceedy part of the town with dirty old men everywhere.
On one of the nights we went to the resturant at the back of our guesthouse where it was BBQ all you can eat for $4, Rheann was in her ellement. We cooked all the food ourselves on a hotplate which was on our table and was really enjoyable.

We then moved to ...

The Children Who Live On Trains

... main beach is owned by a major hotel chain although is accessible.

Poverty is very definantly on the other side of the old railway tracks, where again a big shanty town has sprung up. I did notice however a number of kids hanging around as if waiting for a train, odd as passenger services stopped a number of years ago. However as we arrived an engine and some carriages came into view and were being shunted ...

... has a story to tell - hardly suprising given that 20% of the population was wiped out in just four years.

With Phnom Penh behind me I headed south to Sihanoukville and the Gulf of Thailand. What I was expecting was pristine, undiscovered beaches. What I got were storm battered, deserted beaches - a result of Hurricane Kitsana that recently hit. Still, I made the best of a bad situation and went for my first run in a long time. Afterward I undone the good ...

Beaches and beer..

After a few days in the bustling capital city we decide to see a bit of the coast and head down to Sihanoukville, Cambodia's main beach holliday area. Catching a bus early out of Phnom Penh we get in around 13.00, the bus journey (for once!) being uneventful. Of course we feel like rockstars when we get off the bus and are confronted by bloody tuk-tuk and taxi drivers who offer a ride to Serendipity Beach (real Cambodian name that)for 8USD. Laughing ...

A Short Stop in Sihanoukville

... the pesky mosquitoes, we couldn't rid ourselves of the constant beggars and hagglers on the beach. The next day, we found a comfy spot on the beach to lay out, listen to the waves and sunbathe. Except that all we really heard was, "Ladyyyy, you like manicure....ladyyyyy you buy fruit....ladyyyy you buy bracelet from me???" We were constantly startled by kids and women approaching us to sell goods or offer their services. After about an hour or so of this, we headed ...

Sucked into Sihanoukville.

... enough, the food. But Cambodian food has turned out to be a nice surprise for me, especially after absolutely hating Vietnamese cuisine. I've lost ridiculous amounts of weight from Vietnam just because I couldn't find anything I found appetizing.

The beach isn't all relaxing and drinking though. There are a fair amount of beggars, amputees with arms or legs missing due to (I'm assuming) landmine accidents that pull themselves along the beach smiling and holding out their ...

Sihanoukville-age of the Damned

... lot off and there was still quite a lot of silly dancing to be done before the end of the night. The next day we went to the Ankor beer brewery for the tour. As we approached the guard at the gate we waved hello and he looked a bit confused. "We're here for the tour." "Ëh"? "The factory tour"? "Ëh?" "Where they show you around and you get free beer?" "Ëh?" It was only after about five minutes of this that it occurred to us that what we were asking was actually pretty silly ...

Serendipity

... vaguely similar. In actual fact he had been mugged, as when the two of them went for a late night dip someone had robbed his wallet and her phone. Luckily nothing much in the wallet apart from about $15/$20. No worries.Kindest thief in the world - stole everything bar a single $1 note placed under a stone.

We chilled on the beach for the rest of the day and I got speaking to a gorgeous Canadian girl in the sea (Emma), God she was fine. But she disappeared somewhere on ...

Finding an Absolutely Fabulous Beach

... br>I wasn't convinced. I don't know if he was disabled from birth or a victim of the Khmer Rouge. You never know, although the crash may have been the case.
After a fabulously languid day, we headed back to the guesthouse, glad to have given Serendipity a miss. We just spent time hanging around. The dormant tuk tuk drivers had an unfortunate habit of asking if I wanted 'Lady Bum Bum? It depends on your interest or point of view, I guess.
