No. 3, Green Hill Road Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia, (6)-082-231200
I never imagined I would say the next sentence while here in Asia...but...my busride from Miri to Kuching was actually really really good. I arrived at the Miri long distance bus station...where, yes, there are direct buses to Kuching...and no, they dont take 16hrs...if you go over night...so anyways, I arrived only to be swarmed by like 10 guys asking me where I was going. I replied politely that I first neede to go pee...and then we can discuss the bus situation...always a pleasure. This is...
Kuching, Malaysia ania23Arriving in Kuching in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, was a delight. There seemed to be no taxis, tuk tuks, baggage handlers or anyone else interested in us and the airport was surprisingly pleasant. We'd read that it was a shabby run down old place but it had obviously recently been upgraded, the bus stop wasn't where we'd expected it so wandering off in the wrong direction, we were set back on track by the lady picking up litter whose English was excellent. We had to wait a little while for the...
Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, Malaysia ashley_and_erikThis morning Whitney and I went our separate ways as she went to the jungle and I explored the city. After taking a nice leisurely shower and having some toast, I headed off to find a new hostel for the night. I had looked in Lonely Planet last night to try and get some ideas of where I should start. Lonely Planet mentioned a hostel called Borneo B&B that was only 16 MYR a night (around $5). So I headed that way. Luckily they had plenty of beds so I was fine. With that settled, I went to ...
Kuching, Malaysia callisBoarded a plane to Kuching and landed up at the best backpackers yet - Borneo B&B Inn in Greenhill. This friendly establishment is run by Bidas and May, now know as Mum and Dad to me. After going for a chest x-ray the doctor advised me to take it easy so my chest muscles could recover - which I did!! Here on the sofa at Borneo B&B is where I met Wendy a Canadian teaching English in Japan. The sofas still hold permanent indentations, from our daily rice wine drinking sessions. Bidas an...
Kuching, Malaysia janetmorganShared a taxi to the port with a Japanese fella from our guesthouse. Port was much more low key than in Thailand, we got a little boat that left when full. Then as there is no jetty on the island, we had to transfer to an even smaller boat to go to shore.. We had pre-booked dive course and B&B here for about 140 quid, staying in the 2nd best place on the island. Still cold water though! The island is only 4km long, we walked across it in 10 minutes in order to find somewhere cheaper to stay w...
Coral Beach, Pulau Kecil, Perhentian Islands, Malaysia mothmanMalaysia has a lot to offer but is a little too quiet for me. Yesterday was a bit of a downer for me... I was starting to feel the negative effects of travelling alone until, alas, I met a fantastic couple from Hobart at the Irish bar along the town's beautiful water front. Josh and Summer, who are here for a two week holiday, agree with me in saying that KK is a little too quiet for tourists (compared to Thailand anyway). The food, however, is absolutely sensational... had a great night of c...
Kota Kinabulu, Malaysia shanewilson... have to come and try it for yourself. The tender fern fronds were delicious. Crisp, slightly crunchy with a delicate balacan (shrimp paste) flavour throughout. The garlic ones were very lovely too. At the end of the meal, replete and beered, we wondered over to the hand-washing station and then meandered through Chinatown on our way back to the hotel searching for an early breakfast spot. Tomorrow we are off snorkelling.
Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia 3girlsinasiaOur arrival in Kuching was a mere week before the apparently world-famous Rainforest Music Festival. We did not know this. But we soon found out that it most definitely affected us as we walked with our 15kg-or-so backpacks up and down the main drag, late at night, being turned away time after time because (to quote an old quote) there was 'no room at the inn'.

Eventually we found ourselves infront of ...

Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia deanandmichelle... in air tight plastic bags.) They kept encouraging me to join them, but I was engrossed in the takraw game and stayed outside. Eventually they brought me out a can of Coke and shared some of the desserts with me and the takraw players (which were sort of like seafood donuts.) While Lisa was in the house, the Muslim call-to-prayer started and Lisa was surprised that nobody stopped to pray. She asked about whether it was a recorded song and found out that it was ...
