Bag 5000 Dawson City, Yukon, Canada, Y0B 1G0, 867-993-6789
Today we make like Sergeant Preston as we travel from Whitehorse to Dawson City. He traveled by dogsled with his lead dog King. We, of course, go in a somewhat grander style.
Our worst problem was four sections of gravel and dirt, each between five and ten miles long. Those miles seemed much longer. Needless to say, the coach and car are no longer clean. We also found the frost heaves. These dips in the pavement have little warning. Most are marked by orange day-glow flags next to the ...
Our first stop this morning is the Discovery Claim on Bonanza Creek. This is where the gold was discovered that triggered the Klondike Gold Stampede. Bonanza Creek road is right next to our campground. Parks Canada owns Claim 6 on Bonanza Creek for tourists who want to pan for gold. We passed on this opportunity, although there are still many active mining operations in the area.
We drove back downstream a couple of miles to Dredge Number 4. This is one of the largest dredges in the ar...
Monday (Labor Day) dawned cold and a little frosty in Chicken. There's a gold dredge on the property so I went down early to get some pictures. While I was there I could hear something moving through the creek and brush below me. Finally spotted a pair of moose calves having breakfast. After breakfast and shifting the camper from night mode to day mode, we were on our way again. First stop was downtown Chicken for a couple of pics. Chicken is an interesting community. According to things I've...
Dawson City, Yukon, Canada neeterbTuesday was spent sightseeing in Dawson City. We drove the truck to Front Street and parked near the levee that keeps the Yukon River out of town. There's a walking path along the levee and we'd walked a portion of it Monday night. The Yukon has a sound all its own, sort of a hiss (Vicki describes it as the way a soda sounds when you first pour it into a glass - carbonation). Warren says the sound is because of all the silt in the river. Dawson is just filled with historic buildings and there...
Dawson City, Yukon, Canada neeterb Monday, July 20 - Dawson City, YT - Day 2
Since our group was scheduled to carpool to town at 9:30 this morning, I got out of bed around 8:30. Art told me that he was not going anywhere. He looked terrible. Besides the pain that he's been experiencing for days, he now has alternating chills and sweats. I intended to crawl back in and stay with him rather than meet everyone else, but he reminded me that we usually take John and Martha with us and that if I didn't go, they might not have...
Tuesday, July 21 - Dawson City, Yukon, Canada - Day 3
This morning, the Gulfstreamers were scheduled to tour the Dänojà Zho (Long Ago House) Cultural Centre, but with Art still not feeling well, and me, having had enough of the history lessons, we opted out.
After a leisurely morning, we went for a ride up to Midnight Dome, where the lookout was spectacular. We also wanted to ride into town to investigate the situation at the ferry. All of the rigs need to board a ferry (not at ...
Wednesday, July 22 - Dawson City, Yukon, Canada - Day 4
I'm writing this blog at 1:30 in the afternoon because I don't foresee anything exciting happening for the rest of the day. I think we're all ready to move on.
The men prepared breakfast this morning. Everyone contributed something, but it was up to the men to do the cooking. They did a superb job with the eggs, blueberry pancakes, sausage, and bacon. What a feast! The women voted that the men should fix breakfast every Wed...
... to keep us busy for the rest of the weekend. Six inch by six inch rough cut lumber to edge the garden, eaves trough and baseboard trim. We went into town to do some grocery shopping so took a few more pictures of the buildings. Then back to painting and the installation of new eavestroughing. And dinner tonight was wild bison. Very tasty.
Dawson City, Yukon, Canada jstephenscaSo far this summer has been too crazy. Travelling over 7,000 Km and seeing alot of different places than I ever have before is incredible. The town I live in is called Dawson City, and it's 7 hours north of Whitehorse. In 1896, Dawson City was home to about 80,000 people, as this is when the Klondike Gold Rush happened near Bonanza Creek Rd. It was also the capital at the time. The popualtion now in the winter is about 1,200, and it nearly doubles in the summer. The history in this place is ...
Dawson City, Yukon, Canada nicky.myke... for the place where you can put down in case of emergency had more than a few moments of infinite regress. Most of the river banks are steeply cut by the water. Sections of river exhibit sandbar and islands. Dawson City is unique. The airport is 10 miles east of town and the route is up a river valley totaled by placer mines. Which look pretty cool, actually, like the excrement from ...
