... he lives in Istanbul and is a hang glider, here in Bulgaria for the mountains' promise of pure adrenaline. He travels with an overnight bag ( maybe more evolved than me as a back packer) We found Hikers hostel where we dropped our stuff, cleaned up and strolled Bulgaria's "cultural capital" Plovdiv.
He mentioned that he likes to play Texas hold em in tournaments and such.
When we found a casino . . we registered for the 18:00 game.

to be continued.........

... to make jam and compots, mostly cherries and elderberries, helping in the garden, cooking for the whole group (there are 6 volunteers and 2 hosts) and helping around the village when their neighbors or workers need it. We go into Popovo, the 'big' town nearby every few days for things when we need them, but mostly we just keep it simple. Bread and salad from the garden for lunch, fresh vegetables for dinner - life is good.
Sometimes I look at what Mark and ...

Another amazing thing our hostel did for us was arrange for us and two new friends from Oregon to go to swim for the day. They invited their friend to take us in his "fixed" van. When we got in the door almost wouldn't close...but we arrived safe and had a great day with the local Bulgarians out for a fun swim. We climbed up the small waterfall and plunged back into the deep pool. Yay!
Saturday we crossed over the Danube and into Bulgaria. I hadn't realised they used a different alphabet to English, but it somehow marked our first real change.
We visited a beautiful Bulgarian town called Veliko Tarnovo in the afternoon. Wandered around and had a lovely lunch of a big pizza and drinks (all for about £3!) ate some ice cream and did a spot of shopping. We spent the night in the Dayonovo monastery. It was a little weird and the ...
... and around dirt roads, getting directions from villagers who contradicted one another. Then on one of the dirt hills, we met a pair of MIT students, one of them a native of Veliko Tarnovo! What are the odds! The four of us spent the rest of the morning together visiting several churches, monasteries, and houses, which were all very, very close to one another as long ...
Arbanasi, Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria sojanet... ranks as number one in the rankings for world's most beautiful girls. I even heard that Bulgaria's population consists of 3 women for every 1 man...sure wish I could spend a little more time here! I left Plovdiv after 2 days and went north to another small town called Veliko Tarnovo. This was a beautiful Ottoman town overlooking a valley with a river winding through it. The streets were cobblestone, the weather ...

Veliko Turnovo, Bulgaria rob22... in the fall. The city being the one of the tsars is not hard to imagine. Try to picture Minas Tirith [even though being a bit more magnificent though, there isn't complete comparison]; there are houses made on different levels, rising towards the top of the hill like seats on the stadium. The colours of the houses have different coulour ranges; from yellow to red, where while overrule, with all of them having sort ...
Veliko Trnovo, Bulgaria kati... just idyllic. Veliko Târnovo was once the capital of Bulgaria. The move to Sophia was a recent political move (19th century) in order to bolster their claims to Macedonia and other parts of the Balkans. What a shame, the city of Veliko Tarnovo was built on a gorge on the snaking S-shaped Yantra River. It has the natural defenses of the gorge system and the splendor of being located on a river valley with many majestic views. We arrived at 8pm and with the lights overlooking ...
