... we were ready to head off to Erehwon Station, the big farm that features the mount (note the name of the station, particularly the spelling). We passed through an increasingly rugged wilderness, as the mountains got taller and prettier. Steve allowed us to stop at a couple of picture-worthy areas to take some beautiful photos of the mountains as the sunlight was hitting the peaks at just the right angle.

... and is a valued historic site. Strengthening work is being carried out at an enormous cost. The saddest sight of course was our beautiful Cathedral in ruins. Words failed me when I saw it. There is a split in the amount of people wanting it to be restored with the other half wanting it to be pulled down. ... great and has a lot of wee extras that make it feel quite decadent (a Nespresso machine will be a favourite for sure!). The greatest delight though came from being able to lie horizontally on the super king bed. We had a leisurely breakfast close to the hotel (we didn't need much after the monster platter of lamb that we had at the Running Bull last night) and then walked across Hagley Park to the tourist info office where we booked a trip to the Gondola. ... Pommie boatie” have been destroyed – it all looks very sad. However, we drove out along the coast road and saw a beautiful sunset over Akaroa before winding our way up Port Hills and over the top and back into Christchurch again. A brief foray down to New Brighton Beach to look at the moonlight on the sea and then Diana dropped us back to Bertie.
