Rented a room in the chalet behind Hotel Blumental, bed is European double, simple but excellent bathroom, balcony with views of town and alps. We arrived early and our room was ready, very nice hostess & free breakfast.

Suddenly, for 30 glorious seconds, the sun shone down, the clouds parted, the fog lifted and we could see! There were huge mountains all lined up on either side, with a beautiful valley of snow sitting between them. Then it was gone, it felt like a mirage, or perhaps another world had appeared, before disappearing again, making you wonder ...
Caught the train into Switzerland, saw snow covered mountain peaks as soon as we entered the country - very nice scenery. Arrived into Geneva, transferred to another train and trundled onto Bern. Instantly recognised better English- most Swiss speak German, and instantly noticed increase in prices- trains were stupidly expensive, double what France was. From Bern we transferred to a smaller final train to Grindelwald. Heading into Grindelwald was cool, ...
... every other ignorant tourist does - resorted to English. It turns out that even the locals get a bit confused by the language as not only is German, Italian, French and English spoken but different Swiss - German dialects are spoken in the villages. Language minefield for us unsuspecting tourists!

The train ride is spectacular. Before taking this journey, the best train we had been on was the 'Norway in a nutshell tour' where you take a train all the way up some of the beautiful mountains in Norway, through Flam and the fjords, and keep going to Bergen. Well this one tops that. The vastness of the Alps is no more apparent than when you have your face glued to the window and even staring up as far as you can, only just being able to take in the entire mountain range. ...
