... days, including Salzburg (having grown up on `The Sound of Music`) and the Grossglocknerstrasse - the high alpine toll road and one if the best of its kind Europe - a must-do being married to a petrol head. Sunday, the weather looked favourable, so we went for it. By 10am we were at the toll booth at the northern end near Fusch and paid the 34€ to enable us to spend the day exploring the 48km route reaching an altitude of over 2,571m above sea level. The ...

... sport by occupying ourselves for a few minutes playing on the children's play equipment (they had a pretty cool slide, and an interactive water feature similar to the Mouse Trap board game), then once we'd had enough of death defying activities we took the gondola back to town. Tired from hours of walking, but happy that we'd gotten to see so much of the alpine area surrounding Kitzbuhel. For dinner we found a little restaurant that was reasonably priced and ...

At the top of the detour was the tollway, which was thankfully manned, so 10 Euros in cash later we were underway - all before we could even see the camper vans that were behind us. Just after the tollway the road descends into an enormously long tunnel, and when we popped out the other side we were on the other side of the alps. We pulled into Kitzbuhel about 4.30pm, and while we were tired and a little sore, the trip was surprisingly comfortable. After the 2 ...

Where Eagles Dare

... get to the Eagles Nest 70 years ago. Our first stop were the bunkers that lied hundreds of feet into the mountain. I wish I could have taken pictures (not allowed to) but wow, the bunkers were massive. It took some serious manpower to create this underground city. The walls of the tunnels are close to 5 feet thick and there are over 17 km of underground bunkers. Surprisingly, the bunkers were only used once. The next stop was the Eagle's Nest or ...
