Wellington to Nadi (Fiji) via Auckland - Day 279

I said goodbye to my friends, they've been so kind and looked after me so well while I've been in Wellington. They dropped me off at the airport early this morning for my flight to Auckland. Then I had a long 6 hour wait for my flight to Fiji. I think I may have fallen head over heals in love with New Zealand. Defiantly a place I will return too one day, maybe for good! It's not too cultural different from home, the landscapes are epic and I'd certainly have a better quality of life down here...

Nadi - Day 280

Didn't do a lot today, loitered around the pool at the hostel for a while, visited the pretty awful beach near a big backpackers called Smugglers Cove. The beach here is gray and uninviting with a rather dark murky coloured ocean, you certainly wouldn't come here for the beaches but Nadi is primarily just a transport hub for people arriving and departing Fiji. Nadi is on the west coast of the biggest Fijian island, Viti Levu. The capital of this tropical archipelago is Suva on the opposite si...

Nadi - Day 288-290

Day 288 - 07/12/08 Watched an amazing sunrise on the beach this morning, one of the best I've seen and nice way to start my final day on the islands. I was up so early due to sleeping only half an hour last night, was attacked by more bugs in bed. My face is covered once again in bites, this time around my eye which made me look like I'd just fought 10 rounds with Mike Tyson, great!! Another example of the tropics saying goodbye to me before I leave for the more temperate climate of Europe. A...

FIJI TIME!!!

BULA!!! Bula means hello, welcome, cheers, how are you, and about a million other things and is spoken more often than anything else in Fiji.

Sorry this blog is a bit delayed, but hey, we've been on "Fiji Time!!!" Fiji Time is one of mankind's most ingenious ideas and primarily involves running late and not giving a damn. It's AMAZING. Everything (except buses and boats, we discovered) runs on Fiji Time. If things are a bit behind ...

... sleep when there are rigby players... they stay up late, drink all night, wake up early and since they are all right outside all our rooms by the pool, none of us can sleep!). The hotel staff was again thankful for our care. I've found that Fijian women are much bigger than the men... even bigger than some men from the states... and taller! If anyone reading this knows Paul's brother, Carl, imagine him as bigger ...

Life on Vorovoro!

... special ceremony to welcome him into the Fijian Family. We also had a Lovo ('earth oven') Feast! This was a celebration for the retirement of the chief’s wife and a big send off meal for the five members of Team Fiji that are now in England! None of the Fijians had ever been on a plane so were all very excited and a little apprehensive about their big adventure!! There was soooooooooo much food! But having seen the pig being prepared (a few ...

... secluded and there isn't really anything around so we decided to head to one of the small islands for a 4 day trip. We went to Robinson-Crusoe island which is a small tropical island you can walk around in 20mins. Every day there were a bunch of free activites and shows. The staff were all Fijian and really friendly and fun. We were greeted with a traditional song to welcome us to the island. We ended up meeting a few more people who we got on really well with and had ...

BULA from Fiji!!!!!!!

... been reading about military coups and presidents electing themselves this is predominantly concentrated in the capital, Suva, which is on (thankfully) on the other side of the mainland. Fiji has presented me with my biggest culture change to date, not a shock but it's definitely very different from the first world destinations I've visited so far. Aside from that the ill advised timing of my visitations across the world continue (I have ...

Back to island life

... toilets over here. Freshened up and headed to the plane it feels like the trip is quickly coming to an end. The real feeling is the fact that we are flying back into the northern hemisphere and we only have 9 days left before getting back to Blighty. Still we have while other country to explore now and hopefully it'll be amazing. We settle into our seats for the long haul flight and I end up sleeping with my knees wedged against the seat in front and I don't think that Kim, slept at all.

Tuesday's gone Fiji

... of the Pacific made us one day younger- forever losing a day of our lives. We arrived early in the morning to a warm and humid Fiji. While we were waiting in the customs line, a friendly Auzzi man named Peter who had a twelve hour lay over and invited us to join him on a road trip across the island to the capital city of Suva. We agreed and after checking into our hostel minutes away from ...
