Today we had a trip across the border into Cook County, Minneapolis and visited the pretty Lake side resort of Grand Marais. It's about 80 miles south along route 61 and took us about an hour and a half. I had to buy a 30 day visa at the border which cost $6.

... boys had discovered a little walk up a creek that led into the lake, it went up to the road above and under. They enjoyed walking hunched over through the drain pipe, trying no to step on the trickle of water at their feet. Wonderful to see them outdoors exploring.
Before long it was time for us to depart, hard to say good bye to Laura as it's unknown when we will see each other again. Great to know she has such a great partner.
... deck it sounded similar to the ocean with little waves lapping at the rocks and shore. It didn't have quite the rhythm of the ocean, lovely sound though.
Once everyone was dressed we headed out for a walk. The walk itself was just along a gravel road in front of the house but there were wild raspberries, many interesting fuzzy caterpillars and wild flowers along the way.

We spent two nights in Grand Marais before the trip to Isle Royale so we decided on the day between to drive up the 50 miles of Gunflint Trail to the eastern section of the Boundary Waters Area to kayak and maybe pick blueberries.
This vast network of lakes, rivers and portages had been used by traders for centuries to transport furs east and trading goods and supplies west into the north woods and boreal forest areas.
