... before the whales get to the surface- the naturalist on the ship explained the gulls are like dogs- waiting for the scraps. after the whales go back down, they move fairly quickly and we would have no way to guess what direction to look at next if it was not for the gulls circling. yesterday was so rainy and foggy that there was no visibility. We had planned on a tour in the morning followed by a walk around the town in the afternoon...
But canned the town viewing after the drive through it on the way out to the Mendenhall Glacier..

... The kayak seemed to be the best option since I had an infected toe nail removed from my foot two days prior to coming here. The doctor said things would be fine after one day, but I could still barely walk. A kayak would have cut about 3 hours off the hike round trip if we could have got the kayak to Mendenhall Lake and kayaked across the bay, then hiked an hour or less to the ice cave.
