Next Stop: Turtle Island

So, here is the long awaited story of the worst boat journey of my life. I must point out that I have almost no boat or boating experience in my life to date, so this story will probably seem a little tame to some, but for me it was awful! We boarded a Catamaran to take us to Koh Tao, only a one hour journey. I originally started off in the lower deck with Arend who was watching a film. After about 10 minutes of thinking what a nice journey it was I moved to the upper deck to join Dave and Na...

Koh Tao - Favourite Island

We arrived in Koh Tao in the afternoon and hopped on a Songthaew at the ferry pier for 50 baht each (compared with 10 x that amount in Phangan!). After waiting a good 10 minutes and cramming another dozen people on board, we drove the 3 mins up the road to Sairee Beach where we were staying (but we wouldn't have walked in the heat anyway). We had chosen Blue Wind as our "pretend we've booked it so we don't get hassled at the Pier" guesthouse, and it turned out to be fantastic. There were only...

Diving with Bull Sharks in Koh Tao

... was a tall lanky German, goofy but serious about the dive instructions, which I really appreciated. He explained that we were going to two dive sites and what we needed to watch out for.

There were two types of sharks that had been spotted at the first dive site. One was the black tip reef shark and the other was the bull shark. It was the latter that is dangerous. Apparently there are three types of sharks that attack humans, or are aggressive, and the bull ...

... we were given a short quiz, which was basically the review problems all over again. It was definitely a lot of information but Waz was really good at explaining everything to us after each video. Before that day, I had no idea how potentially dangerous diving could be - you can't just jet back up to the surface if something goes wrong without risking lung over expansion or worse.

After class we went for a run on the beach and then dined on Pad Thai at a local restaurant. Diving in Koh Tao

... the first 4 nights. It was pretty idyllic.

The course was good, there were 6 of us - a Danish couple Thure and Ida, a Norwegian couple Richard and Vivienne and obviously Pete and I. Our instructor was Suki from Hong Kong. Days one and two were a lot of theory and videos and tests, then the pool session where we learned how to get all our kit set up and how to disassemble it all, then we were in the pool for a few hours doing all the basic skills.
Then Wednesday ...

... to say I didn't have many no-sale days during my time on Koh Tao. In 4.5 months I think I maybe didn't sell anything on perhaps 6 or 7 days. Most of those days coming in September...when the weather was ****** and visibility was equally unpleasant.
On most days...I would be so exhausted and drained by the time I finished showing my movie that all I would want to do was go home and sleep. Most times I would have to work the next day as ...

Koh Nang Yuan - paradise or prison?

... cheaper beers to drink on our terrace.
We enjoyed many aspects of Nang Yuan, particularly when all the day tourists have gone away and it returns to the quiet haven that it always promises to be. However, we would probably not recommend it to others. There was a sense of a run down resort that had lost the recognition that it is supposed to be catering for visitors‘ needs, not visitors fitting in with what the resort deigns to provide. We later heard that the day trippers ...

Breaking and Entering

... on an island that doesn't always have electricity to watch myself. Plus, we had a big storm, and it's still raining a bit. I don't have a phone, nor have I made any phone calls in Thailand. I walk across the street to a 7-11 (ah, home!) and try using the phone with a credit card. No luck. I ask the taxi drivers sitting outside how the phone works, and they say there is no signal. I go inside and tell the cashier in my sweetest voice ...

Koh Tao x x x

... from one side of the street to the other.... people literally were throwing buckets of water over us and everyone had huge water guns! We decided to get involved so we bought a huge super-soaker and spent the rest of the day chasing people round the streets! It was such a funny day! Today we went on a boat trip around the island.... there are about 5 secluded bays where you all jump off and snorkel! It was ...
