Predators' Life in Masai Mara

... slow stalk. They hunt in the grasslands
camouflaging in the grass and open woodlands. However they cannot
sustain this very high speed longer than a few hundred meters away.
Like in Masai mara, cheetahs take Grant's gazelle, impalas and hares.
During the rainy seasons when the grass grows very tall, they often use
termite mounds as vantage points to sport their prey. Cheetahs only eat
what they kill themselves, and don't scavenge ...

Goodbyes

... and overall it was the perfect day for the march! It was hot, hot, hot, and the sun was out in full force. Since the weather has been brutal since we have been here, Den and I did not put on sunscreen and were not prepared for the African sun. Needless to say, our poor little mzungu skin got burnt to a crisp. Lots of aloe and solarcaine were applied when we got home.

We went back up to the office that night after the march and met Lilian again to get her to take us back ...

Roaming Lenana

... a woman named Frieda. She was one of the members we had met at our first meeting at the office. She is an *amazing* lady! So welcoming and happy to see us. We were supposed to visit her last week, but she was not home, and she said she almost cried when she found out she had missed us. We visited her for about an hour and a half today and her husband Richard was there as well. They live in 2 room shack, and there are 8 of them that live there. Some of the kids have to sleep on ...

Wild Thing

... feces as long as it keeps them cool . They will eat an animal while its living, they dont kill it first. They will turn on their own kind. They arent the best hunters, but they do hunt in groups and can take down a lion if there are enough of them.

I guess the main thing is that nothing is personal in the wild. There really isn't ego. Its just about survival. Everyone needs to eat.

The Start of the Best Dam Trip Ever!!!

... where the wall was. After I was done swimming, I went to my room which I had to now share with a roommate from the tour and he said the group meeting was going to start in 5 minutes. I said I thought mine was tomorrow and not today. So I went to the meeting just to make sure and it turns I was at the right meeting. The sign I had read had the trip I was taking but not the correct group I was going to travel with. I will now be leaving tomorrow ...

KENYA AND UGANDA: THE GREAT MOUNTAIN GORILLAS

... for those East African roads.

We left Nairobi early in the morning and drove through some appalling slums and later some beautiful country. Our guide’s name was John. He was Kenyan and very passionate about his country and nature. On the drive to the Masi Mara we asked him many questions, including how could there be so much poverty and people just sitting around everywhere. John’s answer was shocking to us. He used a gas station as ...

... Kenya's ability to move quicker in a progressive fashion. One such example is the violence that occurred over the 2007 election where supporters of the incumbent president's tribe, the Kikuyu, clashed with those of the opposition leader's Luo tribe over the fairness of the election. More than 1,000 people were killed and more than 60,000 people displaced in the ensuing violence.

There are more than ...

... a van). Additionally, people were walking down the middle of the highway to get to work or school. Because of all this, it took us about two hours to get to the center of the city, when without traffic, it was about ten minutes (but according to Kharees, that is typical for rush hour traffic!). We went to a really nice restaurant in the city where i had a delicious mocha along with french toast for breakfast. We then walked around Nairobi for about two hours to get ...

Our last week

... our host brother Paul called a friend with a car and he drove us to the closest ER. So to wrap up all this drama, by the time we actually got to the hospital and waited to see a doctor, my BP and pulse were still high but no longer freakishly so. The Kenyan doctor didn’t seem to understand the point of my visit and tried to prescribe me some other cold meds, while I told her a preferred not to take anything else for my cold but I would like to know when my chest would stop ...
