We were able to watch the Ellen Show today on TV, Portia was on the show. It is strange that we are getting more American TV in Cambodia than we have anywhere else. The shower in our bathroom was interesting. The head is positioned just outside the tub and will not stay put. You have to set the shower head down on the floor of the tub while you lather. It is incredible how many poorly designed bathrooms we have seen on this trip. We had a mediocre breakfast at the Riverstreet Cambodian Club. ...

Cambodia in a nutshell

... way with a story to tell and a heart-pounding way to leave Laos.

If Thailand was for sightseeing and Laos was an experience then Cambodia has been educational. Cambodia for those who don’t know much about it (Erica and I included before we came here) is a little country that has been at war with itself for more than 30 years and has only known peace for the last decade. During the mid to late 70’s the Khmer Rouge headed by Pol Pot killed over ...

Now it's my turn...

... br>
The guide spent his time showing us the English signs then waiting for us to read them. At the end, I gave him $2, which is more than he deserved (remember, a draft beer in a local retaurant here is 50 cents so $2 is a good tip). He looked at the money, smirked and said "$2?! Cheap!" I was once again caught off guard and too shocked to respond. What i should've done is yank back the money to give it to the beggars outside. Instead, we went to the ...

Summary of the past weeks

... we decided it was too much for us and we were no longer enjoying the climb, so we turned around and headed back to Sapa. Fansipan 1 – R&M 0.

After Sapa we spent a day admiring the Halong-Bay-style scenery at Tam Coc and the ancient capital Hoi An, before taking a plane to Saigon. In Saigon we visited the Cu Chi caves, build by the Viet Cong during the Vietnam war, and spent a night in the easy going Mekong Delta.

And from Saigon ...

Killing Fields and amazing sunsets

... The Killing Fields. It was hard for me to go from such heavy stuff all day to rushing through the hectic Russian Market trying to find something in my size before it closed.

As has been the case throughout most of SE Asia, we ran into friends we made back up in Don Det and hung out for a bit that night. It was nice to sort of break the air so to speak after such a draining day. It will be nice to come back to Phnom Penh some day and see what else the capital has to ...

Elephants and temples, (but mostly elephants).

... compared to some of our recent trips. About three hours down the road the driver pulled over for a rest. Some people went into the little shop for lunch; we decided to get something to drink. As soon as the bus pulled up a gang of children rushed over trying to sell bananas, pineapples and sweets. One by one the other passenger said “no thanks” and walked away with the children shouting “MAYBE LATER” after them. I ...

... Criminal Minds, 30 Rock, Are you smarter than a 5th grader (much funnier than 'Are you smarter than a 10 year old'), Desperate Housewives, Brothers and Sisters, Prison Break, Bones, Ghost Whisperer, America's next top model and I'm a celebrity US. We watched tons of movies on HBO, Star Movies, AXN and MAX. It's going to be tough for the next few weeks, some of the places we'll stay in only have electricity for 4 hours a day !

Everyone needs a little Cambodia in their lives

... first to pick through the day's rubbish, hoping to collect enough plastic bottles to sell for the day's meal.

Hot and dusty in the mornings with sudden thunderstorms in the late evenings, life goes on in this city and country.. Years of war and mass genocide do not stop these people from doing what they have to do to survive. In fact, I think they're more humbler for the experiences they've been through ...

The Killing Fields

... literature claims it was several million) Cambodian Freetailed bats had set up home in the roof. Unfortunately for the museum their excrement had covered all of the exhibits and brought the ceiling down. But these were rare bats and, instead of calling Rentokil, the proprietors asked Australia to provide cleanup assistance and to install a new reinforced ceiling. So now, as you wander around the museum looking at the exhibits, you are accompanied by the constant ...
