      ... that grip the cable. It is a job that requires amazing strength and precision. The wood blocks need to be replaced every two days which isn't a surprise when you smell them burning on the steel as the Grip controls the car downhill.       ... hotel at about 6pm, checked into our room and headed out into town for our first look at the city by the bay. The first thing we did see was a very very big boat.       Finally we got a tram back to Sutter Street and walked a few blocks back to our hotel - knackered. Even though it was 5am UK time the periodic rumble of trams on the street was strangely soothing. Anyway - I knew that we would be up with the lark at about 5am local - I love jet lag when travelling west-about - it's like it's designed to help you get the most out of the day.

      ... discovered that parking was $40 a day plus tax - that's $45 a day - a bit steep when we had already payed for the room. BTW everything is 'plus tax' in California - it's really annoying. Why can't they just add the tax on like we do with GST in Australia.
