    Fishguard to Newport

This morning we are back at Fishguard. Some more bits of trivia: 1. The town's name is derived from the Norse 'Fisgard' meaning (unsurprisingly), fish yard and dating back to the 8th century. 2. The modern 'upper town' along with Goodwick developed with the promise of a new harbour and railway line. 3. The old Fishguard around the harbour area was used to film location scenes in 'Under Milkwood'. We head to the harbour to investigate. There is a warning sign concerning ...

... French surrendered. Leaving the monument, we drop down into Cwm Fellin which offers some shade in its leafy valley. We cross a bubbling stream and then we are puffing our way back up the other side. This is to be the start of another energetic couple of hours of steep descents and ascents as we negotiate the many inlets. Up ahead the sound of strimmers - the National Trust are busy cutting the undergrowth down for us walkers. We thank them kindly ...

The path skirts around the massive ridge with the option of a long slog up the 'mini-mountain' should we so desire...err probably not. Mick and I part company below Garn Fawr as he retrieves his bicycle, chained to the coast path post earlier for his return journey to his camper van, and I meet Ian for an early lunch. Ian has ...

... is painted white, the other isn't. Apparently they have two different owners: The National Trust and The National Parks, so one has painted the beacon and the other has not. As we turn the corner to drop down into Porthgain we see some disused mine buildings - amazing that neither of us spotted these yesterday as the are extensive! And now to 'The Shed' for its famous fish and chips, followed by a pint up at The ...

... that the grocer bringing provisions to town also brought typhoid killing the community. Another claims an almighty storm occurred drowning the locals. It's just two miles to Porthgain from here although I am wondering if that is also 'as the crow flies' as it seems a lot further! Finally we descend a set of steep steps down to the harbour and across the village to The Sloop Inn for a pint. It's very convenient that this also happens to be the bus stop. ...
