Jardins del Rey Cayo Coco, Ciego de Avila Province, Cuba, 53-33-30-13-11
... of a pedalo or a canoe to explore the crystal clear picture postcard waters. Snorkelling was also a habitual practice along with drinking rum punch, speaking Spanish to the hotel staff and eating the amazing food. The real Cuba would come in a week's time.
Cayo Coco, Ciego de Avila Province, Cuba harryvs... a tower so that he could watch them. Sounding like a laugh, we hit it. There wasn't much to see, just a tower that's 44 metres high, the views were great. Old sugar cane country everywhere. We hung out, watching the sky turn from dark gray to blue, and then we came down. We had a quick look in the old house as well, and just like everywhere else, this place sold the same **** !!!

Back in the car, we headed back to Trinidad, this time, no detours !!!
Sancti Spíritus, Sancti Spíritus, Cuba uncle_davrosFirst time off the North American continent, in the 1970s. Loved the palm trees and the Caribbean white sand and clear blue ocean. No big hotels on the beach in the 70s: now it's a major tourist destination, so I'm glad we enjoyed it before the Americans snuck in!
Veradero, Central Mexico and Gulf Coast, Cuba rutherfo... choppy for snorkelling, so after a nice swim there we headed to another area called Silvia which was a bit more sheltered. There we saw quite a few blue and yellow striped fish, thousands of tiny silver fish and a massive spiny black and white one hiding under a big lump of coral. We also saw some purple fan coral and Greg and Clay spotted an eel. On the way back we stopped at another beach and walked out to it on a boardwalk through the mangrove-like trees, but ...
Caibarien, Cuba sarzmcMarking a map "day at sea" is hard, so we choose Cayo Coco, Cuba to give you an idea of where we were heading; we could see the mountains of Cuba, but never docked anywhere in or near Cuba. Another relaxing day at sea, get up late, eat late, go the the 'debarkation talk', read more in our books. I did spend a little time at the casino, spent a couple up and down hours on the quarter slots ...
Cayo Coco, Cuba 2technocavers... floats. Most bore socialist and nationalist slogans, and some had pictures of Fidel Castro and Che Guevara amongst others I couldn’t recognise. In a patiently organised exercise once the parade began, all of the marchers from each of the cross streets waited for the procession along the road to pass them before filing out to join the back of it, until the march became so long we could no longer see its front. It was a massive demonstration of fervour ...
Sancti Spiritus, Cuba troywilkinsonPolitely described as tranquil, and impolitely as boring, Remedios may be a bit quiet even for us. One of the two churches in town is closed for renovations. When we go to the music museum next door, it too is closed. Frequently, these places are shut for hours during the mid-day, but I can't quite make out the response from the guard. The only word I know similar to what he's saying is March. It's open tomorrow perhaps? No, it turns out that the museum is in fact ...
Remedios, Cuba mbgowerI wake bewildered, a truck rumbling past my head. Strange walls, heat. Cuba, it suddenly occurs to me. But in the predawn, it's not the island but dead classmates that occupy me. Mark Crawford, a high school character, died the day we left on our trip. As I packed clothes, blood packed in his head, an aneurysm. What can you say about someone? Does a catalogue of features, shared experiences, convey anything real ...
Remedios, Cuba mbgowerThe perfect place to decipher the rhythms of Cuba. Our casa is right on the corner of a thoroughfare in this sleepy town, and our huge hinged doors open up a whole side of the living room to the street. By 6:30 a.m. life is beginning to trickle past -- pedlars, bici-taxis, parents peddling kids to school -- and it never really stops all day. Lucy and I peek out through the iron bars of our tourist cage ...
Remedios, Cuba mbgowerCayo Coco punished us for intrusion firstly with news of Australia's disgracefull elimination from the WC. On seeing my Ozzy flip flops and Gus' Fosters t shirt we were instantly ment with an onsluaght of opollogetic Cubans pretending to be equally disgusted with the unspeakable call. That day was needless to say named Gallagers to Italians day, unfortunetly we didnt find many in Cuba so Nole and Liam remained on good behavior. The beauty of Cayo Coco (which is a small island in the ...
