The Taj to Mumbai

Finishing Rajasthan - Agra (Taj Mahal) - Mumbai (formerly Bombay), INDIA Jan 30. 2007 We were glad we saved the visit to see the Taj Mahal for the end of our Rajasthan trip. Several hours were spent taking gawking, being amazed at every detail and, of course, sketching and photographing as much as we could. The security is pretty tight there, and the lady who strip searched me (OK, not really) would not allow my color pens, calculator, mini-flashlight and sketchbook in! "Sketching, not allowe...

... our right was a slowly rolling river, reflecting the towering eucalyptus trees pleasantly.
We went to check out the town, walking up the muddy road for about a kilometre, rickshaws and buses beeping at us to get off the road, when there was only the road, or the muddy (I suppose you could call it a) pathway) next to it. There were tea and souvenir shops to our right, and the cows quietly rested in the middle of the road, in what would have been the shade of the thick canopied ...

Indian style of course with no helmets, it’s funny the things you allow abroad, although it was only for mile down a country road and we had given the driver a full brief on driving at only 10mph. This was just before he wheelied down the road with no hands on the handlebars and broadsided round the first bend!

The climb was at times a real steep scramble and pretty challenging, but on reaching the peak we felt ...

The 4 hour bus ride from Cochin developed into a 6 hour journey as we headed east in a rickety bus into the mountainous region of the Western Ghats. I was moving with Asa, Laura & Jay, some good girls that I met on the bus. Due to the temperature difference at the higher altitude we drove into a beast of a storm, with heavy thunder & lightening that eventually struck a ...

Mad for Munnar

... the food was the blandest yet! DAY 3 On the last day we visit the tea museum in Munnar and saw a short film about the history of the area and of the company which seems to be very philanthropic (social provision for employees and their families) and forward thinking e.g. tailoured education and employ, ent for children of employees who have learning disabilities). We then saw the tea - producing process before driving back to Fort Kochi.

I'm definitely getting one of those when I get back to London. I also got up at 5:30am and went for a hike to the highest peak in the area - a meager 2,695m, but a steep hike, which (I ...

Here we were in the depths of South India and there was tea named after where some of its biggest drinkers were. Later find out that the tea here was not for export - it was only for indians (they drink alot of it!) and its more of a power form like instant coffee. the name appartently comes from the original owner ...

... it was too strong so we couldn't. It was very picturesque and hilly as we were in the foothills of the Western Ghats. There was a down side to it though. The waterfall area is also home to hundreds of macaque monkeys. Here they are considered vermin and now i know why! They are very precocious and will try and steal your bag. In fact they freaked me out a bit and i was glad to get back on the bus! They are a nusiance on the campus too. One came into the kitchen the other ...
