... On the way to the airport the cabbie is talking about how he’s been spending all day bringing people home from the airport because of flights being cancelled due to the fog. This does not comfort us, but by this time the fog has lifted anyway so we’re feeling more confident. This confidence has paid off because it turns out we’re only delayed by about 15 minutes. Of course, we haven’t gone through security yet, but I’ll let Jessica tell that ...

Re-freeze and final thoughts

... was "Cancelled". Not late, but cancelled. Here we go again! - Tina goes to Air Canada, and they outright said our flight WILL be cancelled too, so they gave us flights up to Yellowknife on First Air, and holy-hell... it's an EARLIER flight. We're thinkin': "First GOOD thing to happen to us yet". - Kicker? Cut to two hours later and that flight is now delayed until 10:30 PM, getting into YK at midnight. We knew Canadian North was full, and we were then ...

The Spectacular Nahanni National Park

... Pam decided to head back to Fort Simpson, much to our disappointment. Once back in Fort Simpson Pam and Ted checked the weather reports and suggested we return in a couple of hours to see if the weather cleared up. At 14:30 we returned to find that the weather hadn't changed. The only option remaining was to give it another go first thing in the morning. With our fingers crossed we headed back to the B&B.

We have arrived!!

Yellowknife!! We have arrived! The final route was very scenic. We saw a herd of buffalo. We saw a red dead forest which glowed amber in the setting sun. Some forest floors were blackened from fire and in certain ares near Rae there was smoke and even small fires still burning. The waters were beautiful. Majestic sweeping currrents sometimes surgins with ...

Final entry on Yellowknife AWG 2008

... thing around Yellowknife. First up was the NWT Legislature tour. Normally stuff like this gives me the yawns but the tour was top notch. We did the art gallery thing as well looking at carvings and moose hide tufftings, and lots of other native art. The north seems to have more than its share of good artists. On Sat we went to the Closing ceremonies for the Games. Great event with local ...

Spanish flamenco guitarist Juan Martin, his wife Helen + accompanying flamenco singer Rosa Angeles + flamenco dancer extra-ordinaire Salvador "El Tigre" Moreno were in Yellowknife performing on the weekend of October 26-27. I had a chance to spend a day touring with them around the hinterland in search of Bison. We eventually found a small herd about 125 km out of town. It was the first time any of them had ...

Dempster Highway - The Drive to Eagle Plains

... drive on an isolated gravel and shale road from Dawson City to Inuvik in the Canadian Arctic, the weather forecast was of prime importance. On that front, the news was good, as the weather forecast for Dawson City and Inuvik called for mostly sunny skies with no forecast of snow. This was great news, since the road had been closed two days earlier due to a snow storm. Being 732 km in length, bad weather along any section of the highway is enough to close the ...

Fort Simpson to Yellowknife - Day 4

... That, however, would have to be left to the TV show - "Myth Busters" to determine. Unwilling to let go, I paid another visit to the historic confluence of the Mackenzie and Liard. These rivers were of course the super highways of early northern explorations, not to mention the canoe routes for many generations of First Nations peoples. I couldn't resist another opportunity of getting a better insight into the local lifestyle by posing ...

Grave erreur!... Ce contre-temps ainsi qu'une 1/2h de retard dû au ...

Got my Rolling Stones tickets

... Anyway, a plain white envelope arrived yesterday..... the type I USUALLY chuck as it said "if undeliverable return to sender" - you know the kind. I don't know why I took the time to open this one, but THANK GOODNESS I DID as sitting inside the envelope were 2 tickets to the Rolling Stones concert at Giants Statium, East Rutherford, NJ (apparently considered NY)!!!! I just about fell over and wondered why they put them in such nondescript envelopes and then I realized uhmmm they ...
