<br ...
Waitara, Taranaki, New Zealand bindannmalweg... what are known as New Zealand's "Great Walks", it's necessary to reserve both your trek and the huts or campsites you plan use. The Great Walks are New Zealand's most popular hikes (or maybe the ones we tourists do most often) and so the DOC has developed a booking system to help minimize the impact on these often fragile environments. Either way, it is a nicely organized system, especially if you're feeling overwhelmed with all the things you can ...
New Plymouth, North Island, New Zealand abcanaresToday was my first day as a final year medical student. Somehow it didnt feel like the first day back after the summer holidays....it still feels like the summer holidays. or maybe the winter holidays here! Still another lovely day today with not a cloud to be seen, frost biting the air although apparently its 17 degrees today. Still not got used to it being under 30 since oz! So first day was pretty uneventful, sat through a whole 4 and ...
new plymouth, New Zealand nikkiyates... ground and passed several steam vents. We were quite relieved when we split off of the Crossing trail and headed to the hut away from the hordes. But we still had to squeeze into the hut for a bunk. We ate dinner early because we've learned that cooking around 7 is a bad time and you have to fight people for bench and table space. It was worse at the following hut and we had 4 people on a 3 person bunk ...
New Plymouth, New Zealand sarahandaaron... it was raining heavily we decided to walk along the coastal walkway as we would be leaving for Wellington in the morning. We looked at the Wind Wand Sculpture and went to the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery which was interesting. We got up the next day which was Christmas day and phoned our families, then after breakfast we set off for Wellington our next stop on our Christmas exploring.
New Plymouth, North Island, New Zealand adventuretime... 6hours so far so we were driving the last hour to the look out spot. Glad we did! The mountain was clear and we could see the entire thing. It did look like a mini Mt. Fuji. Just one huge mountain stuck up all by itself! We got to the top and there was only one other car there blaring music out of some speakers from the trunk of his car. Jesse parked close and went to use the bathroom. The guy ...
New Plymouth, North Island, New Zealand nztouring... our tickets... and only seemed to grab about 5 at a time. OMG.. talk about frusterating! There were some pretty irate people, and we had thoughts of just charging the gate. (Power in numbers!) So after a very frusterating time, they finally decided to just take our proof of purchase, credit card used to purchase the tickets, and I.D. to let us in. Why they couldn't have done that in the beginning, I have NO idea! (I have heard that Kiwis have the lowest I.Q ...

New Plymouth, New Zealand curtislowe... a lovely meal here while we looked out over the city of the sails. That night we went to meet some Kiwi's Orla knows from working in Manchester, Anita and Tahe. We went to the Viaduct area of the city (lots of pubs and restaurants on the harbour) with them. It was a lovely setting and we had a great evening. As it was Auckland day there was a great fireworks display on (one of the best displays we've ever seen) and this created a great ...
New Plymouth, New Zealand orlao0... which we turned off for a while so we could see the glow worms (actually glow maggots) and that was really cool, we got really cold though. This area is called cave country because there is a lot of limestone caves underground, I can't remember how big the area is but i remember thinking it was really big when they said the figure, i was also thinking i should try to remember what the figure was...never mind 'hey'! (all New Zealanders ...
