Bintan Lagoon Resort

Like I said in the previous entry, we took a 90-minute drive north in a very comfortable car, got to check out the island in between, talked to a great guide who told us lots about Indonesia, and I personally felt like it was a pretty fortuitous mistake. Of course, opinions varied.

Day 1 - Cloudy

Actually a trip to the Bintan Resorts area doesn't really constitute a proper holiday to another country.. the resort developments are Singaporean, currency used are SGD, and it's devoid of any local activity unless you are willing to pay for overpriced trips out of the resort area into local territory.. which is (surprise, surprise) separated by the rest of the island by barbed wire, checkpoints and armed guards.. another trademark of PAP-land eh? Hehe.. Well, despite the artificial surroun...

Day 2 - Sunny

Rise and shine.. It's a bright, sunny day! Perfect for heading down to the pool/beach to get my daily dose of Vitamin D! If we had gotten up early that is... ... Half the morning was wasted lazing in bed and watching reruns of animal planet on cable tv.. (And trying to get Imp to wakeup wakeup.. hee) Well, the morning was not exactly wasted.. A strategy meeting was ongoing among the ruffled bedsheets and pillows and snippets of animal planet (it was the Valley of the Wolves).. We were to lea...

Off to an Indonesian Island

So after a few days, we had had our fill of Singapore. We had hit the quay strip, Chinatown, Little India, museums, even eaten at Taco Bell (Thailand doesn't have one, so Dane and I were really pumped about that visit!). We were tired of sight-seeing and wanted Derek to feel like he was getting a true vacation, so we decided to head for a beach for our few remaining days. We were told there was an Indonesian island with beautiful beaches not far from Singapore, just a 2-hour ferry ride away. ...

45 minute ferry ride to Bintan Indonesia. USD $ 10 visa on arrival. The immigration officers took pity on us with a small child and took us out of the line and got us visas immediately. Cost USD $15 each. Note not touts but uniformed employees of the Government of Indonesia. Bintan Lagoon Resort is like a upscale Carribean resort

Historical Traveler Reviews of Bintan Lagoon Resort Bintan I

The Worst resort we have ever stayed in!!

from SianBrown
We had a deluxe room..!!Since when has dirty bed covers, cracked tiles in the bathroom, white plastic garden furniture on our tiny 'deck' and a damp smell permeating every inch meant deluxe!! The staff were rude, unhelpful(we later discovered that the hotel had been sold a month prior to our arrival and there was no general manager to handle the countless complaints) and frankly couldn't give a dam. The food was indeible and very expensive. Avoid all restaurants. Even the breakfats was a disgrace- curdled yoghurt, soft and fizzy tasting fruit salad, intstant coffee, and powdered orange juice sum up the breakfast alone. We got off the island as soon as we could!

Not all it's cracked up to be

My wife and I stayed at the Bintan Lagoon Resort for two nights on November 11 and 12 this year.

As a 10th anniversary celebration we chose to stay in a Forest suite that had uniterrupted views of the sea. This room was beautiful and of a good size.

Fortunately, we only stayed for the two nights as we found the plentiful restaurants to be quite expensive for Indonesia, and nothing nearby outside of the resort. In fact, we felt quite captive.

This may be a little harsh, but having travelled through most of asia on a regular schedule, and if they are trying to compare themselves or compete with Thailand or Bali, they are a long way off the mark in terms of variety, price and service.

The grounds of the hotel (apart from the golf courses) needed a make over and in particular the amenities such as deck chairs needed to be replaced as they were mostly very tired.

In a nutshell they are charging Singapore prices in an Indonesian resort so someone is making a killing.

Be aware of the fact that if you use credit cards they charge you in $Singapore, then convert it back to Indonesian rupiah at a rate much lower than you would get on the street .... adding substantially to your bill!

Disappointing, but we won't return.

A very good place to avoid

If you go, please understand your will be captive in the resort, AKA, Bintan Resorts Prison. You will not be abe to purchase anying.... food, tours, drinks, souveners ect., that are not sold to you by the resort owners at prices that are at least double what they would be in Singapore, and 4-10X what they should cost in Indonesia. Also bring Sinapore dollars in cash, and lots of them, as the resort charges you everything in S$, and then double hits you on the conversion because when you pay by credit card, the credit will be charged in Rupia, using thier "special rate" to convert thier s$ prices back to Rupia. This will result is another 10% increase in your bill.

Also the place is not that well maintained, Paint chipping off the pool slide and other things like that.

Amazing Resort

Our stay at Bintan Lagoon Resort was amazing. I have never experienced such hospitality! The room was beautiful, the golf was spectacular, and the people were so unbelievably friendly, we couldn't have asked for a better holiday. It was also very inexpensive - a tremendous value for the money. I would recommend this resort to anyone looking for a great holiday with plenty of activities (my children LOVED LaserQuest!!!)

Loved the Resort

We have just returned from a weekend at the Bintan Lagoon Resort. The hotel is good and every room has a nice balcony and lofted bed. We had a wonderful view of the pool through a big beautiful window.

To be honest the pictures of the rooms on the website were quite a bit nicer than the actual rooms were but this was somewhat expected. The resort was right on the beach and had lots of things to do, but be warned that very few activities at the resort were free or included at the rate. I believe that the only activity that was free was the beach, pool, and table tennis. Fortunately the activities cost was in Singapore Dollars so wasnt as steap (coming from the US). The activities that we decided to do included:

The Jet Skie - This was about S$65 per 30 min and you were only allowed to go in a circle near the island. It was my first time on this so the first 15 or so minutes was fun but after that it was kinda old and began to hurt.

Bike Rental - We first tried the tandum bikes but they were much to small and had no gear shifting ability so didnt work out. We then exchanged this for two other bikes. They were nice and didnt charge extra for this. We rode along a short path near the beach and along other paths that were bike accessable but after about 35-40 min of riding we had seen all the little trails and didnt seem to have anywhere else to go.

Cooking class - We wanted to do this but when attempting to sign-up found that they was no longer offered (not for some time). Yet they still show this in the room guides and on the channel 1 video in the room that shows resort activities.

Pool - There were two pools - Nice, big and the perfect temp. Lots of fun.

Beach - This was very close to the room and the water was nice and warm and the beach was pretty clean with very few people (roughly 5 other couples).

Table Tennis - Free for hotel guests. The wife and I had lots of fun playing.

Laser Tag - About S$20 for 15 minutes. We figured that this was a bit pricy and very dependent on the people you play with so we decided against this because got short on time.

In Room Full Body Massage - This was ABSOLUTELY the BEST! The wife and I LOVED this!! It was only about S$40 (S$80 for two) for a one hour full body massage where they come to the room. This was excellent after all of the activities we did running/ridding all around the island.

Sea Food Buffet - S$35 - This was a good buffet (drinks not included - just water). Lots of variety and the sea food was well prepared.

Golf Course/Driving Range - We ran out of time and was unable to do this but the resort had these things onsite.

All in all this resort was about S$180 or $110 US per night and was a pretty nice stay. Once again there were lots of things to do and lots to eat. In addition to the stuff I planned to do there were other things to do that would be quite fun.

The staff was very kind, curtious, very helpful and most spoke good english.

Great Family Resort

from A TripAdvisor Member
Just visited the Bintan Lagoon Resort with my two children 7 and 10 and had a superb time. The resort has everything you could want in terms of facilities, all reasonably priced with wonderful staff. We did a snorkelling trip by boat and had a wonderful experience.

The public areas are well appointed. Our room was large, comfortable with an amazing view of the South China Sea. The decor was a little dated and worn but saying that I felt the rate that I paid (on a public holiday weekend) was value for money. A big bonus was that we got a late check out and so used the the hotel all day before taking the last ferry back to Singapore.

The food at the pool was fine, the buffet dining was adequate but I would avoid the Orzo Restaurant, where we all found the food to be poor.

Would thoroughly reccommend this resort to any families looking for a good value break.

Fantastic value

the other reviews must have been written by people very hard to please. we stayed here for a night whilst visiting family in Singapore. having only booked it that morning by phone we found the hotel fantastic, and reasonable at £60 (UK) we were greeted with indonesian music and a drink on arrival. the room was huge and very clean, not a great view but we were only in it to sleep!

the pool area was fine, the staff couldn't do enough for you, although it wasn't peak season.

the evening meals were themed buffets (american and middle east) with a fantastic range. breakfast was a huge buffet of fruits, bread, cereals and cooked food. you wouldn't starve here!

we would definately go back to this hotel!

We'll be back!

My boyfriend and I spent Christmas 2004 at Bintan Lagoon Resort and this was our first time in Indonesia so didn't know what to expect. The transfer from the ferry terminal at Bintan to the Resort was hassle free, luggage taken care of, etc. Upon arrival at the Resort, first impressions were pleasing. The grounds were meticulously kept and the Resort clean and tidy. Check-in was painless and the staff very helpful. We had a garden view from our hotel room and the room itself was spotless. The only problem we experienced with our room was the personal safe. We reported the same fault with it (not locking!) 3 times and after the third time of it going wrong, gave up and didn't bother using it. We took all our meals at the Resort, mostly at Kopi-O, the buffet restaurant, which has such wonderful views of the South China Sea. The swimming pools were fantastic and very clean as was the beach. We never had any problem getting a lounger by the pool or down on the beach. Due to the high level of security at the Resort, we did not encounter any vendors or locals at any time. The Resort offers several excusions in conjunction with the other Resorts in Bintan and these are worth going on. All water sports at the Resort were off limits due to the fact that it was Monsoon season and too windy, however, we were aware of this from the Island's website which is very informative. All the staff were so friendly and polite to us - we will definitely be returning!!

Beautiful pool, but...

from vanlea
Beautiful pool, but check in service not good, room for three adults extremely inadequate and manager not interested in our enquiries for a larger room. "take it up with your travel agent". Fortunately we were only there for 3 nights.

The whole complex is very tired looking and could do with updating.

The pool area is stunning, but repairs to broken tiles etc need to be attended too. Not value for money! would not go back.

Not that great.....

from hotel-snob-london
We visited in the summer 2004. My family were staying with us in Singapore and we thought it would be nice to go away for the weekend and booked one of the large villas at Bintan Lagoon. The villas looked good on paper and from the outside but unfortunately it was very dated inside. In fact, it wasn't that great and the bathroom was horrible. They need to refurbish the whole hotel. Golf courses are good but the Ria Bintan down the round is a lot better. Have stayed at the Banyan Tree Bintan three times. There is no comparison but then again the Banyan Tree is a lot more expensive.
