We then caught the small ferry across the river and went to Hubuxiang street for more dry noodles with sesame paste, and spicy potatoes, before returning back to the hotel via the ferry to get a taxti (very difficult!) to get to the station for our 5pm train back to Nanjing.

We got up and took a taxi to Guiyuan Temple, which was enormous. We thought at first that the main temple was being renovatd but then found other areas on the site. There is a tradition that you enter the Temple of Arhats (small models of Buddhas) where there are over 500 Buddhas and you start counting from wherever you entr until you get to your birth year. Will and I got the 0905 train to Wuhan, Hubai Province, another old concession port on the Yantgtze River, arriving in Hankou at 12.18, and got a taxi to the Holiday Inn Riverside.

... it's not really as clean as it could be. A lot of people could be employed cleaning up the (mostly) polystyrene, thongs, paper, pigs and cattle that are floating down in large amounts. When we reached Badong the boat docked and Sonja, David and Greg boarded smaller boats to be ferried along the Longchuanhe River. This consisted of three narrow gorges. ... and I met her other grandfather who has aged very well. We enjoyed good food (as always) and Anna’s aunt bought us gifts, which were traditional Tibetan necklaces that her husband had brought all the way from Tibet following his recent motorcycle adventure there. They came in male and female form and I donned mine politely, although Anna’s parents understood that I wasn’t going to make a habit of wearing it.
