    This morning started at 4:00. We both woke up to the worst smell you can imagine at that time in the morning. I think the kitchen was frying, or boiling my sneakers.     Rhodes is the most important island in the group known as the Dodecanese or South Sporades. It is also the most easterly island of the Aegean Sea.

    In Greek mythology, Rhodes was created by the sun god and a sea nymph. According to Homer, the first inhabitants were Dorian Greeks. A fortress was built and the city of Rhodes was founded. A huge bronze sculpture, Colossus, was built at the entrance to the harbour but was bought down in an earthquake in 224 BC.
