Kaye brought her suitcase with her as she was leaving on the Tuesday and with the car being out of action we thought it would be safer for her to be in town in order to catch the train. We had a lovely lunch at Katy and John’s. Happily I got the car fixed on Monday so I was able to go back and have dinner with them on Monday night.

We then caught the ferry that we thought was going to Managgio which is on the opposite side of the lake, but it went back to Bellagio so it was an opportunity for me to change out of my wet shirt and get a jacket, of course this was also the signal required for the rain to stop and the sun to come out. ... back to the railway station, but we’ve fallen for the place just the same. I think the key is the unassuming way the town just gets on with being, while people like us come and go. The little piazza below our window is the only square in the town so it’s not only the place where people meet, but also a favourite spot for kids to run and do the things kids do.

On Sunday we visited Bergamo, a beautiful city made from two parts - the 'cittą alta' which is situated up at the top of the town, and the 'cittą bassa' which is lower down.

It is a really beautiful city! The 'bassa' part is alive and bustling with people, lots of tourists when we were there! The 'alta' part is what the family really wanted to show me though, and I don't blame them! It is STUNNING. We had to walk up many, many steps to get up the hill, ...

Venice continued………and the mosquito bites back. John woke in the night to discover he had been bitten on the head so covered himself with his sheet for the rest of the night. In the morning his eye felt strange and when he looked in the mirror he saw why. A quick visit to the pharmacy provided a diagnosis of a bite on the eyelid which should go down in 24 hours and no treatment required – let’s wait and see (through one eye!).
