Well, last full day in Sicily, so off to visit the town we have based ourselves at. We are down near the coast, but the old town itself is 200 metres high up a very winding, steep road. It is an old Sicilian town with narrow streets and plenty of shopping, both low and high end. Reason for the high end is that other than airports, it is on of the few places you can buy expensive items without having to pay the VAT if you are a non EC person. Usually you ...

... tell why the rich and famous have houses here. After catching the ferry across to Sorrento back on the mainland and walking up 1000 steps to get to the bus we noticed that our token Asian Olivia wasn't with us. It was later discovered she didn't even get off the ferry and was heading back to Capri... Funny stuff Had dinner at a restaurant overlooking the bay of Naples. It had million dollar views and was all very impressive then shot back to the hotel for a recovery from the sun and ...

After a good nights sleep and a full breakfast, we were well fuelled for our trip to Palermo, which we was 80kms from where we were staying. Uneventful drive until we hit the town itself. Wow, it is hard to get around with numerous one ways streets. We finished down near the sea and stopped to get out a stretch our legs. It would have been hard to drive around Palermo, so kudos to Neil! Whilst we were stretching the legs a bloke called Christian who had a tuk tuk got talking ...

Close Encounters of the Cefalu kind!

Well bloggers, we started a two day adventure to the other side of Sicily (which the girls were so looking forward to...not), with a drive on the autostrade to Messina and on the northern coast of the island. We stopped at a couple of towns that we cannot tell you what they were as they are not on the map and I lost my Sicily book the day before at Mount Etna! The trouble with Sicily is that you need to cover a fair distance to see all it has to offer. There ...

Etna

Early start to make the Ferrovia Circumennea train that goes around Mt Etna. We managed to find the train station thanks to Sue. After seeing us 4 passengers on the platform, we noticed that they pumped extra diesel into the train! At 9 we set off on a 114km journey which took just over 3 hours. The landscape contrasted from market gardens, vines, orchards to waste land of volcanic black basalt. It ...
