10,000 steps to Junagadh

... top of the mountain you are met with a fascinating collection of beautifully carved Hindu and Jain temples, most of which were built around the twelfth century. The clouds, still as thick as they were before, swirled around the temple's large triangular spires and the many intricate statues as if it were a scene from an Indiana Jones movie, this mystical sight alone was definitely worth the climb.
We explored the temples for a while ...

Famous in Gandhidham

The breeze becomes as welcoming as anything I could presently want as it brushes against my overheating skin; it's so nice that I pick up speed purely to indulge in this pleasure. The wind is like being in a hairdryer but it’s still a breeze. I pick up speed yet again but this time instead of bellowing in the breeze the front end of my bike starts violently shaking like the tyre has just been shot out. If I brake or do anything sudden I will lose the bike. My grip on the ...

Sasan Gir Safaris

... was not quite that good either. We watched the stars again. Aman: There wasn't that much to talk about on the first safari of the day, which was around 6:30-9:30. The second one, though, we saw 4 lionesses! At the end of the day, the only thing we didn't see that was in the park were leopards, and there are only 11 of those. We were very lucky. We saw Nilgi, which are sort of like blue deer, and some Sambar, which are ...

... like situation through beautiful green fields overflowing with life to end up in the hilly dry forest of the sanctuary. We saw lots of anthills that reminded me of Botswana too. We took our time, visited a temple along the way. Somnath Temple was built seven times and is set right next to the sea. It really was beautiful, though we didn't go in as it was hot and dirty. We have been ...

Marine National Park, Narara Beach

Janpal: Today I woke up and was expecting another early morning, but apparently we needed a permit to enter the park and we didn't have one yet. So the driver went out and got us the permits needed to enter the park. We usually leave at about 9 am, and today we did homework until about noon when the driver came with our permits. It took about a half an hour to get to Narara beach. On the way we saw many pink flamingoes. We got movies and pictures of them ...

Delhi to Ahmedabad to Jamnagar

... companies outside Ahmedabad. After that we saw lots of raw cotton. Our driver told us that the cotton is sent north to spin and then comes back to be woven. It was really neat to see the huge piles. We also saw lots of salt piles. Gandhi's famous salt march started in Ahmedabad and ended south in Surat. Gujarat is surrounded by water and where it touches land, borders Pakistan. So there was a good security presence everywhere we went.

Wild Ass

... four of us were quite the source of entertainment and interest when we wandered around town. It is quite confronting being stared at so openly. The safari was actually a bit disappointing as the main person, Devji, was not able to take us instead his son did and his son's English was not as good and he was not that knowledgeable about the birds and animals. There was also a high ratio is driving around in ...

Pampering, Part II+a brain near melting point

... ascetic in the northern mountains in his youth, then u-turned and went on to university honours in economics and anthropology, then government and UN postings in places like Russia, Uganda and Afghanistan, has and does NGO work with many groups all across India, and now his AG posting in Rajkot. Mighty impressive, as is his brain, obviously. I can safely say he's one of the very few true intellectuals I've ever met (like I'd ...
