Days 8 & 9 - We Melt in Antalya

... was fascinating. It displayed all of the relics from the tomb of a 20 year old girl. How often do you actually get to see the stuff the person was buried with? It is so often stolen! One of the items on display was the bath pan used in the Turkish bath. It could easily have been the same one we used in the bath yesterday.

I recommend this museum as a must-see, even though the second floor wasn't air-conditioned. It was certainly more interesting than the Anatolian ...

... the map of Antalya that we wanted to go. The men right away nodded and shuffled us over to a minibus. Within 10 minutes we were where we needed to be. (They're so nice here!) We checked in to our Pension and tried to cool off a bit. We were hoping to check out the town, but it was difficult with it being in the 40s temperature wise. Before we truly set out to see some of the city, we decided ...

The best preserved classical city in the eastern Mediterranean is Ephesus. Here one can really get a feel for what life was like in the Roman times. The Great Theatre built for 25000 people had the ingenious design of the cavea - where each success range of seating up from the stage is ...

Not much interest for me there. But the Whirling Dervishes...another story. PS I have some great videos of the dervish celebration...they;re just taking too long to load right now...ill have to send them later when i have a stronger signal...they're well worth it...

... to be true in most of Turkey.) Many intersections have no street signs, and many of the rest only name one of the streets. The 'point of interest' signs were also deceiving because they were geared towards cars, and some areas required drivers to take three right turns to make a left. At one point, Nathan used Turkish to ask for directions. The man Nathan talked to was very nice, but he insisted it was 'çok uzak ...

... the students with other years, these 4 actually made a contribution to the team. But, most importantly, they stayed out of trouble. Last night, they reminded me how I escorted a particularly sleazy guy away from them at one of the parties, saying "You leave my girls alone!" I think these girls are clever enough to have steered clear of him but my maternal instinct kicked in and I did not want to take a risk. I've rented a car for our little post-Catal excursion. We're ...

Harold is one of these people who is fond of cross-cultural comparisons and his current interest was Siberian Shamanism- as if it was some sort of an appropriate model for understanding the Anatolian Neolithic. He thinks it is ok to take something from one culture, look cross-culturally for ...

... ourselves. On the return, since it was Sunday night, we had no such luxury. Sleep was spotty and unpleasant, but it made the transition to a non-airconditioned, hot but confortable bed not so bad. All things considered, a fantastic weekend. Next week I am, most likely, going to Kosh (for lack of Turkish characters, I spelled it roughly phonetically), a less-touristed little spot a couple hours west of Antalya, on the Mediterranean of course. Should be great as well.

... possibility of small garden plots between the buildings and the more I think about it, the more I think it is a feasible hypothesis. We know these people were practicing small scale horticulture and the distance between the settlement and the agricultural fields was 10km+ so why not have it closer to home?? The land surrounding the site was subject to flooding so it makes sense to use an abandoned house that has been subsequently filled in with trash as a small ...

I ran to get our government representative and show him the damage, since both of our site directors were away. We also grabbed our photographer, Jason. There is a big hole in the wall now and the collapse affected three houses. But the silver lining (in my opinion) is LOOK AT ALL THOSE BRICKS! Roddy went around ...
