      Playing in the woods

... expansiveness of moist, fresh, salt air to the closeness of the forests with the smell of cedar and earth was quite a change. The giant redwoods and Douglas fir trees were so amazing in their size and silent beauty. The sounds are muted in the forest, no echoing fog horns and buoy bells, but soft shuffling of forest critters and dripping of moisture accumulating on giant leaves. To stand beside something that has been living for ...

... 25 miles out it cleared up. We chose a route excluding motorways and toll roads, and on Hwy 17 sometime before San Jose we hit some woodsy twisting roads and started seeing some redwoods again. The terrain became somewhat like the Malahat drive; it was nice. The spirit that washed over me so abundantly in The Grand Canyon was here cradling the audience when The Indigo Girls took the stage for the final Sunday concert. We hit the Avenue of the Giants early and it was like driving into a tunnel. Jst magnificent to see these 2000+ year old tree that have survived so much. Even the fallen ones are awesome to see. So thankfull for the foresight some of our predecessors had to save some of these wonders for us to enjoy. Hope we can preserve something for our grandkids instead of using everything ...

      Calistoga to Fort Bragg

... moved in our direction... With any stops at Clearlake now off our agenda we rode on to Fort Bragg, back on the coast.  Out ride took us around a large chunk of the lake, which stopped smelling a fair way further round, and actually became quite scenic.  Soon after the lake we turned off westward and started heading through redwood forests.  The trees stretched as far as the eye could see and formed almost tunnel like situations over the road at ...
