Where's Newfoundland.... ??

Oh dear... final port... and a Force 10 rough sea has prevented the ship from getting into St John's Bay... The Captain told us quite early on today that he had made a quick decision not to attempt it as the storm we're in is picking up and will move east across the Atlantic. The idea was to steam on across over the next few days to beat it... but we're in it!! A Force 10 is quite an experience, we think it might actually be a Force 12 (Hurricane Force). In our ...

... were telling me the "must see" places.

I decide that hiking with my new friends is the better option. I am constantly seeing new places. Seeing these places in Newfoundland might be new experiences but cultivating people relationships is just as important.

And so, that was what I did today.

A beautiful, sunny, extremely windy day hiking the east coast trail with Michael, Elena and Micha and then supper in a small town ...

TCH...west to east...DONE!

... of the Avalon Peninsula that I want to tour is much further away. My original campground chosen was in Holyrood, more centrally located, about a half hour west.

I set the trailer up in the overflow area. Basically a gravel parking lot. No electricity, no water, no sewer, no computer, no microwave, no HEAT! It's cold out. Weather forecast of near freezing temperatures tonight.

Can't do much in the trailer, might as well go for ...

Day 1: Canada

... until late tonight, when we all can get back on board and hopefully arrive at London tomorrow at 6:00am. Now, I was supposed to be in Stuttgart a day early so I could hang out and leisurely make my way to the location where I am to meet my program coordinator tomorrow. That's at 11:00am, so I can only hope that somehow I'll get there in time or nearly so. By my next post, I'd better be in Germany...

Newfoundland, a small island with big views

... view of a three small (comparatively speaking), close to shore icebergs. Content with the fact that I had seen icebergs in the area I continued on towards St. John. The dive again was one of those that seemed much longer than it probably is in reality. The fact that it rained throughout the whole day, combined with pothole dodging made the 440kms to St. John a lot tougher than usually driving the same distance elsewhere. I also had another little ...

St John's, hold down your hats, the KIWI is Here

... as you have to push the handle down which I was not doing instead I was doing like every other place and pushing the trolley, until I had to look at others and realise how big an idiot I was making of myself and finally got it to work the right now. But off now to some accomodation, and see what tommorrow brings as I feel like complete pavement pizza right now and sleep is the most important thing for me right now. Signing off for now Kinda KIWI

... the human form superimposed on beach stone, well, it was as if I alone was discovering something that made me want to tiptoe. It was easy to forget that many other people have probably seen this exhibit since it was set up. After a short while we all drifted together again and as some people talked about the local ecology and history, I marvelled at the size of the waves that were rolling in and crashing on the rocky shore. I have still to this point been thwarted ...

St. John's again

... to go this way". And the headed on down to Cuckold's Cove. It would have been a very sweet little cove to meet your Army friend and have a sneaky get-away I suppose in times past. That is why it is called what it is; however, now it is covered in floating garbage. It is a long way to come just to try to take a photo of the photogenic cliffs and cove while trying to avoid foam coffee cups, plastic jugs, etc. Also, by this time, the weather had changed again and it was ...

... disaster. Streets were widened as firebreaks, buildings were reconstructed in stone and brick, and merchants who had lived above their business moved their households to less-threatened areas of town. Nevertheless, downtown remained the commercial, social and religious centre of St. John's. [Across from the new city Hall] cross New Gower Street to Adelaide Street onto George Street. A revitalization program has transformed this formerly narrow and little-used backstreet ...

The structure then fell into a state of disrepair and was in danger of complete collapse when purchased by the Brigus Historical and Conversion society in 1987. Reconstruction began in the summer of 1988 and completed in 1991. Brigus is also the home of the Bartlett family of ...
