travel day continued

I have FINALLY arrived in Istanbul. I say finally, primarily due to the fact that I left Tuesday at 5pm and it is now Wednesday 11:55pm. In addition, I was nearly arrested at Heathrow airport and sent back to America. While waiting to board my plane, I was playing a game I call "find the American". I am quite good at it, American's are typically easy to find in a crowd but I wanted to find a specific "thing" that separated the Americans from everyone else. At first I decided it was the hair. ...

Istanbul

Today I went on a city tour. Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and the Spice Bazaar. Mostly, I wandered around by myself...away from the rest of the group. Everyone is nice, but the guide is over-the-top with facts, I wish I was interested...I'm just not :( I prefer to take pictures and talk to the locals... Lunch was fabulous, I ate at a pudding shop (whatever that means) I had garbanzo bean soup and pasta with veggies. The spice bazaar was interesting, but you have to wander outside the "official...

return to Istanbul

did I mention I hate tours? we spent the entire day on the bus for a 4.5 hour trip..first a WC stop then lunch then another WC stop...ugh! So we arrived in Istanbul to late to see any sights. We did however, have perfect weather for Bosphorus cruise. Later tonight the farewell dinner. Early to bed tonight since my drive to the airport is at 6am (double ugh!!)

Historical Traveler Reviews of Best Western The President Hotel Istanbul

No problems!

from Oneida88
We stayed at the President Hotel for 2 nights prior to our Seabourn Cruise. I picked out the hotel based upon reading numerous reviews of Istanbul hotels. My sister and her husband, who are very picky, said I did a good job. The room was a little small as was the bathroom, however, how long do you stay in a room? The hotel had an indoor pool and a balcony you can either lay out on or sit on while having drinks and taking in the amazing views. Having breakfast on another balcony was just another plus to the hotel. The staff were quite pleasant and willing to assist with anything. The hotel is walking distance to the Grand Bazaar and if you are a shopper, that is a ++. It is also quite close to numerous seafood restaurants which were so good and different, we went there both nights for dinner. Be careful which hotel you book because as I walked through the areas, I recognized alot of hotel names that I read about and the entrance looked like a little hole in the wall. We were all amazed at how friendly and nice everybody was in Istanbul, I would definitely go back and for the price point, I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Very good location

from A TripAdvisor Member
Near quite near of the big bazar about 5 minutes, the room was very big and they have a good view in the top of the build, you can see great part of Sophia Church and Mosque Blue. The breakfast was great.

the swinming pool is very small.

Good hotel in my opinnion

OK for a 4 star hotel

from asif644
Stayed at this hotel for 3 days. The rooms are average size. Bathroom was very tiny. Air conditioning did not work. Informed reception 3 times and still they did not bother to fix it. The soap dispenser in the bathroon was empty, asked reception on 2 occasions they said they would get me some soap but never did, so l went to the local shop to get my own.

The good thing about this hotel is the location, about 3 mins walk to the grand bazaar and walking distance of all the main attractions.

Mixed reviews

It's interesting to read these other reviews of The President. I agree with many of the comments about the helpfulness of the staff (front desk especially), the incredible buffet breakfast in the Marmara Room, overlooking the Bosphorous, the wonderful Terrace and views from it, the attractive Fitness Center and its locatio overlooking the sea. We had a lunch and a dinner at the hotel and both times the food was good. And yes the rooms are smallish unless you have a suite. Also, we had asked for a room with a view of the Bosphorous, which they advertise. But unless you have a suite, you won't get much of a view, I'm afraid. The AC was a plus. The water was always hot and plentiful. The place is handy to tram, grand bazaar, etc. My biggest complaint is that it's difficult to find a quiet corner in the hotel. They frequently cater to large parties on the Terrace and in one of the lower rooms. They also have a nightclub. So if you're interested in falling asleep before midnight, forget it. Thumping from the music will keep you awake, unfortuately. The good news is that these parties usually end around midnight or so. Otherwise, with it's attractive lobby and other features, it's a good buy.

Best position, dear swimming pool and spa

from MichaelMancini
We've been in Istanbul in December, 2004. We choose this hotel, for the position was very convenient. Included in the price room there was the pick-up from the airport, one dinner, a free entrance in the spa and a welcome cocktail. The hotel is a bit kitch and rooms are a bit small but if you dont' look for a luxurious hotel this is the best (I sent there also my brother with his girlfriend).

The breakfast on the roof is very spectacular! You can't miss the fish from the near Kumpkapi restaurants.

Ah, last but not least, It's 150 meeters from the Gran Bazar!

The President Hotel, Istanbul

A great 4 star hotel, right in the centre of the old city in Istanbul. Perhaps not quite up to a four star in the UK, but everything was in good working oreder and all the rooms had air conditioning (much needed). We stayed in a Junior Suite in June 2005 for our Honeymoon and had one of the few balconies that the hotel had to offer as a result, which gave us great views across the city. The hotel has a small indoor pool, near the roof terrace and a great roof terrace restaurant, which provides fantastic views, right down to the sea and is also quite reasonably priced. Worth staying here for it's location to the grand bazzar, Topkapi palace and some of the larger mosques, all of which are within walking distance. Be warned there are some very dodgy hotels out there that may look OK in the brochure but you may find them very different on arrival.

Very convenient hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Best Western Hotel was very conveniently situated for all the sites in the Sultanahmet (about 10 minutes walk away). Although there are hotels that are much closer to the Blue Mosque and Aya Sophia, I feel this hotel offers two advantages:

1. It is the closest to the Grand Bazaar (about 3 minutes walk)

2. It is 2 minutes walk from the Tram station - which takes you to the new town (where you can eat and drink well). You can also top up your Akbil here (a pay as you go electronic tag system which you can use for cheaper and hassle free travel on public transport).

On the going out front the area around the hotel is pretty dead at night with no decent restaurants or bars. If this a major factor in your holiday planning I would suggest staying on the other side of the Golden Horn in Beyoglu.

Inside the rooms are very clean, with all the facilities you would expect in a 3-4 star hotel. Our gripes would be the lack of sound proofing (huge gaps between the door and the door frame), housekeeping staff that let themselves into our room when we had the do not disturb sign displayed and no in-room safe.

The complimentary breakfast is excellent and the breakfast room has superb views out over the sea of Marmara.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay at the hotel and would recommend it.

Great place to stay!

from ralphedel
My wife, son and I spent a week at the President Hotel in the beginning

of March 2005 during our first visit to Istanbul.

During our stay we found the hotel staff to be very helpful and

pleasant. Although the hotel was not in a tourist area of the city and

didn't have many places to eat or relax in the vicinty, it was easy to

get to other parts of the city by cab or tram to sightsee.

We had room 522, a suite with a balconey overlookng the Sea of Marmara, which was very nice. The breakfast buffet was much better than average although there were too many smokers and insufficient ventilation so be prepared!

A cab ride from the airport to the hotel cost my wife and I $15 and took about 45 minutes. You might have to shut your eyes sometimes riding around the town but didn't see any accidents.

Altogether we had a very enjoyable first visit to a fantastic ancient

city and stay at the President Hotel.

Convenient Location and proper service & quality

from aozcakir
We have chosen The President Hotel for our guests from USA. The reason choosing this hotel among many others in Istanbul, is because of its convenient location to the sights in old city center and its service & quality standards.

Our guests has spent 3 nights and were delighted both by the city of Istanbul and the hotel itself.

We are also very much satisfied with the service of the sales team as well.

Superb Hotel - Just what the doctor ordered

from carny51
My boyfriend (30) and I (23) moved to this hotel from a hotel in Taxim Square - We hated the Taxim and really wanted to bhe in the Old City where everything you want to see and do is - The President was perfect in location (practically across the road from the Grand Bazaar and down the road from the Mosques, Topkapi etc. etc.

Everything from the rooms, veiw, staff, leisure facilities, feel, cleanliness etc was excellant - i really cant fault this hotel for anything other than the prices of the drink and food - but who cares when there is a massive choice of cheap retaurants and bars on your doorstep!

Seriously dont look any further - this is the perfect hotel!

thanks to everybody there xx
