After leaving Nicaragua, we chose to head north, flying over Honduras and El Salvador, to Guatemala for our last three weeks. We took a tour of the city with Wifredo the taxi driver (recommended by hotel). It has been 33 years since I was here with my buddy Tom Valentine, in 1976. Back then, they had just suffered a major earthquake a few months before or arrival. Barb and I will retrace some of the trip I took years ago. Barb has been to Guatemala twice before, (Tikal- from Belize and The Pe...
Guatemala City, Western Highlands, Guatemala thomasgillamWe visited the museum of Anthropology. Many of Guatemala's best pieces of Mayan Art have been taken by European, Mexican and American Museums. The works were taken by Maler and other explorers in the mid 1800 and early 1900s. Art theft is still a problem here today. However, the Museum in Guat City has several terrfic pieces of ceramic and stone sculpture. Sorry my camrera batteries failed and I missed some of the best pieces. But I did take a few photos of their ceramic work. Most of this wa...

This was going to be an adventure.

As we climbed through the forest and fields we were accompanied by a couple of dogs and a woman who kept trying to offer us a horse. Everyone politely refused but she seemed quietly confident. And she was right to be, it didn’t take long before one of our party cracked and jumped on the poor beast. Abruptly the forest cleared and we found ourselves on a desolate ...

Panajachel, Guatemala, Guatemala travelrobWe got up early in the morning and headed to the zoo. The zoo is very colorful. Since it was Sunday it was packed. They have all kind of animals, from elephants to lions, bears, birds, snakes, llamas, and so on. It took us about 3 hours to walk all the zoo. As we were having lunch it started to rain really hard including thunders and lightning. The rain was over soon but the ...
Guatemala City, Guatemala, Guatemala jaribg... Since I only had the afternoon, nothing major was planned other than to get acquainted with the city. After checking in and calling a few travel agencies about the various activities I want to do during my stay, I headed out on foot to explore the city. My first destination was Parque Central, a delightful park with a fountain in the middle. Many locals and tourist were enjoying a beautiful spring Saturday by strolling around the park. The park is ...

Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala msdemeaner... the Mayans and there art work would take an interest and look around the gallery. From Casa domingo we walked around the streets absorbing the atmosphere and found ourselves a shuttle bus to take us to the Aztea coffee plantation. I have to say I was dying to see how coffee was made. We arrived at this working plantation and Miguel took us around explaining the process how the red berry became the coffee that we see in shops. It was amazing see ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala salsitaAntigua's nice, always was, and probably always will be. It may not be quite as rustic and indigenous as the true highlands, but that’s a trade-off. It’s VERY accessible to Guat City for easy in-and-out and therefore at the crossroads for the entire country. And it’s very beautiful, an old colonial town, the original capital. Guatemala no longer requires any visas whatsoever, ninety days on ...
