Historical Traveler Reviews Best Western Sovereign Hotel - Mystic

Loved Mystic...but not the hotel

from

I loved the seaport and and the shopping. The Rhode Island beached are a few minutes away and they are clean and beautiful. However I do not recomment Best Western Soverign Hotel. They boast ont he web page that it is within walking distance of attractions. That's true, however you have to walk a long way on a busy highway with a teeny tiny sidewalk. YOu are walking very close to speeding traffic and it;'s not good for kids or strollers. To get to the aguarium you haveb to cross at a very busy intersection. Although the aquariun is a couple of blocks away we ende up driving there. Also... the breakfast was aweful. Even though it was free, we were 4 families traveling together and at least one person in each family passed on the breakfast. Actually teo out of 5 in my own family wouldnt eat it and one was my 16 year old son... and you know how THEY eat!! The other thiong was that they say they have wireless internet but we could not connect. They kept giving us new passwords and nont worked. They then tolf me that it was a problem with my computer, but I know it was not because i heard others going to the front desk complaining about the same thing and getting the same answers. I needed to ge tonline for my job and it was a big inconvenience for me. Aside fromt he hotel.... Mystic Pizza was delicious. There is a really cool shop called Silk Imports you should see. Also there is a bard wioth many kids activities in the Seaport that was great! all of the people in the seaport were so knowlegable it was an incredible learning experience. I recommend Mystic as a great vacation spot but stay away from best western.

Dirty rotten hotel

from

this is the most disqusting hotel i have ever had the displeasure of staying in, we actually tried to leave but on the holiday weekend we were unable to secure another reservation anywhere else. we had two rooms both were equally horrible so the issues here are throughtout not just one maid having a bad day. The towels we're so stained and gross that i could not take a shower whats the point clean up and dry off with a towel stained with other peoples bodily fluids. This issues was with every towel in both rooms. The sheets were clearly not clean either they we're heavily winkled and matted down the only way for a sheet to get this way is through repeated use. the only person willing to even lay down on top of the bed was my husband and that was only beacuse he had to drive the next morning the rest of us sat up all night. The decor is horrible not changed since the 70's very sad and depressing feeling, smoke stained faded art work on the walls just makes you feel bad. the short walk described on the hotels web site to mystic shops failed to mention that the walk includes going under a highway over pass with a very poor sidewalk and crossing four lanes of heavy traffic. there are many other choices for lodging in the area do yourself a favor stay somewhere else anywhere else.

Find somewhere else

from

This hotel was a great disappointment after staying at the excellent Best Western Sovereign at Albany. The room was very shabby, with extremely well-worn furniture. The Ground Round Restaurant was OK for dinner, although there are plenty of other choices nearby, but the breakfast buffet was very limited.

O.K. for a 1 night stay!

from

This was a typical Best Western hotel in my opinion. Budget standard. There was certainly some maintenance issues and the property is in need of a renovation, but we had a comfortable enough one night stay.

The room itself was clean as was the bedding and bathroom. The breakfast was dire though, I can honestly say it was the worst breakfast I've ever had, really poor quality food, straight from the freezer -yuk. No one in our group ate it. In fairness to the hotel, I think their rates include the breakfast, so you could just leave it if you wanted to.

Location wise it was convenient for the highway and into downtown Mystic. The MoheganSun is a must for anyone visiting - just like Vegas!

Friendly Staff, Free Shuttle, Indoor Pool

from

This hotel has one of the friendliest staffs, great ammenities. and a perfect location. The van driver of the free shuttle to the casino should be called a concierge. He was so helpful and full of helpful suggestions!

The Ground Round attached to the hotel was so convenient and again an exceptional waiter! The large indoor pool was a hit with my kids.

The rooms were comfortable, and clean. I heard the new owners have plans for renovations - I can't wait to return and see what they do!

Unpleasantly Surprised

from

The rooms were EXTREMELY DIRTY {last occupant's beer caps left near the bed} Carpets not vacuumed well, stained comforters, wrappers of some sort sticking out behind the dresser and along the side of the bed that was literally up against the wall. Rooms were tiny, as well as, the beds. These were NOT standard full beds. 2 children under the age of 7 could barely sleep in the same bed. {So I guess the bed against the wall had it's purpose}

The refrigerater was broken and took them 6 hours to fix and it STILL was not cold.

I would never stay there again nor any Best Western again.

We had fun!!

from

We were pleasantly surprised upon arrival at the hotel. Everything was clean. The hotel was child friendly. Children had fun in the game room and the playground. And we all enjoyed the pool. The breakfast buffet which came with our stay was fair. Our only complaint was the cleanliness of the restaraunt (The Ground Round). Overall, stay was enjoyable. Would recommend to friends.

Comfy & close to everything

from

This hotel was comfy, but was a bit scruffy and needed updating. It was close to all in Mystic and interstate to head to beaches, although acquarium was for children and staffed, i think by children. Ground Pound Resturant within hotel was great, staff and regulars lovely. Room did have TV, coffee, fridge & hairdryer! Would recommend as safe and parking is free!

Hotel is wearing out

from

This was our second stay in three years and the hotel seems to be going downhill. The rooms were OK but shabby and the beds starting to sag. There is a nice indoor pool although we didn't use it this time. The location is convenient to the highway, Olde Mystic, and the Aquarium. One thing that annoyed us - they give vouchers for continental breakfast buffet at the hotel restaurant - but only for two people per room. We had three so had to pay for a breakfast. That is not the way to compete against the hotels that include breakfast for all.

What a treat!

from

Very surprised at the value here. Had been to many chain hotels in the past on vacations. Great to take a chance and be so rewarded. Close to everything, great service!

As we meandered south into Connecticut, the landscape started to change, gentling a bit as we went along. Fewer conifers, towns closer together. I ...
