Off to do some sharking...

Fiona The second day of driving was every bit as thrilling as the first, the highlight being the sandwich we had for lunch in Carnarvon. We were relieved to finally reach Exmouth by late afternoon. The reason for our marathon drive was to swim with whale sharks on the Ningaloo Reef, off the coast of Exmouth. So, first stop was the office of 3 Islands Marine, the company that we were doing our swim with, to pay the balance of the cost of our trip. From there we went to our hotel, the Best West...

A Great Reef without the Barriers

After a long drive and a brief stop in Exmouth to buy snorkelling equipment (we were intending on doing a lot over the next few days), we arrived in Cape Range National Park, from where you can see the Ningaloo Reef. Our campsite was small and friendly with its only facilities being a pit toilet.

The area was all we had expected and more – beautiful white sandy beaches, turquoise sea, abundant wildlife, sunny weather and of course, the reef. We rushed straight to ...

Amazing Beautiful Crystal clear water

... of the mountain before you reach the park rangers office on the way to the camp site.
Neds Camp is right on the water and it is beautiful the water here is in the Ningaloo reef. So what does one do here, well go snorkelling of course and it was amazing. Firstly we went to Torquise Bay and the name lives up to itself. The water here is so many colours of blue. The reef is at the edge of the bank in ankle deep water. I went snorkling and was amazed by the amount of different ...

#37 where the range meets the reef

... national park which was a sensational experience although sOOOO windy! There are no facilities or water so when we ran out of water it was time to move on, and to be honest the wind is unbearable in a canvas house so we were happy enough to leave. (For the first time this trip we can see the advantage of a caravan!) We moved to The Lighthouse Caravan Park, nestled at the base of the Vlaming Head Lighthouse. This was a great base, halfway ...

Finding Nemo

... A tiny wee school of fish chased Mum.

Next day, we tackled Ningaloo reef proper and headed for Turquoise Bay. The above-average ocean swell made it unsafe to take small children on the famous drift snorkel, what with the rip which can carry the unwary out to the open sea. (Carrie and Simon will have to await that delight until they return as grey nomads.) Instead we settled for a tamer snorkel in ...

P is for Perth

P is also for potential. Something my other attempts at blogging have lacked. Mum just called me in tears. I tried to console her with fact that I'm only ever a phone call away. It didn't work. I've never had to say goodbye to as many ...

back in sunshine again

... I was a tad sore the next day!

There is so much more to do on in Australia but for me, the highlight really was being able to see my friends again and to be able to spend time with them. The next time I visit this continent I will do the sightseeing but for now, its time to head back home to Africa and spend time with my family.

Thanks to everyone in Australia! You made this part of the trip unique!
... steps. Getting back in the car we stop at one more vineyard and it is here that mark gets offered a job. Kim is thoroughly chuffed to have helped sort her little bro out, playing the doting older sibling. Back at the tent we pack our stuff and say our goodbyes before getting on the road as we really didn't want to have another 3 hour drive before flying again as we had in Melbourne. Realising that we have left all of our maps with Mark we wend our way back to the domestic airport getting ...

and so the story continues...

... back out on the road toward the eagle bluff lookout, where we looked over the cliff down into yet more clear, blue sea, where hundreds of reef shark swam about looking for a mate, along with the sting ray. they seem to be everywhere! after escaping the clutches of shark bay, we finally made it back out onto the highway, where we quickly stopped off at the overlander roadhouse, minus any working air-con, where we picked up a snack and took photos of hundreds of bright green budgies, each ...
