San Jose is a great city but a little polluted. We arrived in San Jose (my first international trip) and I knew, as we made the bus ride to our hotel, that the travel bug would be a constant distraction for me for many years to come. After checking in we found a nice restaraunt where I had my first Cerveza Imperial. It was cold and went down great. We spent our remaining time in San Jose checking out the local markets and eateries before boarding a bus to the Caribbean town of Puerto Viejo. I...
San Jose, Costa Rica chrismyers Another foreign country, another bathroom without any lights (that I can figure out at least).
Well, my morning started of at the nice decent hour of 4:30 a.m. The good news is that I didn't get a ticket on my way to the airport. I did however pass a Highway Patrol car but fortunately he was sitting on the Airport Road offramp. If he had been on an of the earlier ramps I am pretty positive my drive would have been interrupted by having to wait for him to write me a ticket. I slammed o...

Just when I think that I have got this whole Costa Rica thing down, I suffer a setback. "Diane" raved about a little town called Cartago. She expressed that it was a great place to visit and not very far away. I decided that after school I would take the short bus ride there, have lunch and see the sights. When I asked the people at school where to catch the bus they offered to have a taxi guy they trusted take me.
I declined.

... Its SO GOOD.
After that we met back at the ISA office for a tour of downtown San Jose. We took the bus (slightly sketchy/scary) from the semi-residential neighborhood that we live in to the center of town. We exchanged our money and were shown the tallest building in San Jose--its about 12 stories tall. The buildings are old/dirty-ish but still seem cleaner than in Mexico. After our 2 hour ...
... to the south) where we loaded some of our gear upon horses. Watching the Bribri pack a horse is a site in it self, rice bags and cocoa nut twine does wonders for packing heavy machinery apparently. Then we finally made it to our home-base just across the border of Panama and Costa rica overlooking a wedding of two gorgeous streams with a misty mountain backdrop. some Jaguar tracks, and all the sweet cacao (cocoa) you could eat, which I ...
Gondoca, Costa Rica bassmanms... things like crystals and jewelry. On top of the spiritual rock are plants and leaves. There are 4 candles around the edge, one in each corner and a double candle in the center. A double candle is a big candle in the shape of a diamond with two wicks. The idea of the altar is to make prayers or wishes for the new year. This year is a special year it only comes around every 11 years, so what you wish you'll get for eleven years, or that is the idea anyways. You might not ...
San Isidro, Costa Rica travellerdalton"The Most Memorable Experience of my Life" Traveling to Costa Rica to volunteer with Tropical Adventures at La Escuela del Rio Negro was unmistakably the most memorable experience of my life as of yet. Rio Negro, Costa Rica tropicalcr... than it is in the States. We had two field trips today: one to a cigar factory, and the other to the home of a woman with an old-fashioned oven, where we were to learn how to make traditional Costa Rican pastries. I enjoyed the tour of Tabaco Station more than I'd expected I would. It was interesting to watch the process of hand-rolling cigars and learn a little about the different leaf varieties. We each got a complimentary souvenir cigar about the size of ...
