San Jose

San Jose is a great city but a little polluted. We arrived in San Jose (my first international trip) and I knew, as we made the bus ride to our hotel, that the travel bug would be a constant distraction for me for many years to come. After checking in we found a nice restaraunt where I had my first Cerveza Imperial. It was cold and went down great. We spent our remaining time in San Jose checking out the local markets and eateries before boarding a bus to the Caribbean town of Puerto Viejo. I...

The Joys of Traveling

Another foreign country, another bathroom without any lights (that I can figure out at least).

Well, my morning started of at the nice decent hour of 4:30 a.m. The good news is that I didn't get a ticket on my way to the airport. I did however pass a Highway Patrol car but fortunately he was sitting on the Airport Road offramp. If he had been on an of the earlier ramps I am pretty positive my drive would have been interrupted by having to wait for him to write me a ticket. I slammed o...

Another night in San José

... King menu on my trip. Pizza Hut last night and Burger King today, it is a disaster!!! The only thing I have regretted not buying here has been a souvenir lighter. Well, I actually did buy one in Monteverde, but I must have misplaced it somewhere, and they do not sell lighters at airports. I had my extra bag wrapped up in plastic, although I had to pay 9 USD for it - and it ended up looking so funny that I just could not help myself laughing ...

5 things I learned about the bus...

The whole public transportation thing is an issue any time you travel outside of where you live I have lived in many cities and every city seems to have its own bus etiquette, rules and system. Like in New York and Chicago you can apparently pee on the train. In Boston you can only pee in the station. At least that's what my nose tells me.

Anyway, I guess when I was coming to Costa Rica I thought it would be like t.v.. You know when they ...

Day 25, Wednesday 08/26/09

Last night a bunch of us went to El Sultan-hookah bar/club. It was fun but I was so tired by 11 that I left with the "early group" and I still was tired this morning.

Had eggs, toast with melted "squeaky" cheese, apple pieces, pineapple, strawberries, juice, and coffee. Just reviewing in class again today and we learned the 'imperativo' which is used for commands and such-its super easy.

Had an ISA meeting and they're doing a cooking class/thing for us tomorrow ...

La Paz to San Jose Costa Rica May 18 - 28

... dip in the water there, which perked up our spirits a bit after being so ****** off about not getting up to the top of Cerro Chato. That evening we went on a tour to Volcan Arenal and the surrounding area which was created by lava flows from a huge eruption there in 1968. But just as were starting our trek through the forest, it started to **** rain so the tour was a total, literal, washout. At the end we went to a viewpoint of the volcano hoping to see some flowing lava, but no ...

February 2009 visit from Grandpa and Abuela

... morning was nice but we were glad to get to the farm. Grammy and Grandpa found the farm different than they expected, they thought that we would be in a banana leaf hut, but really it's a nice house and they are finding it very comfortable. They like the birds and flowers and butterflies best. The first day they saw a Toucan and a Blue Crowned Mot Mot and then a Morpho butterfly. They are also helping out with the farm chores. Grandpa really likes ...

Managua to San Jose

... two suitcases, pushing one, pulling the other. Annette shouldered hers, hefted a bag with one hand, and pulled our third suitcase with the other. As we left the terminal, one of the taxistas gave us a unique farewell. "Enjoy your walk!" Twenty minutes, a friendly young man for the last 100 yards and one stoplight later our little procession walked up the short steps to the Little Victoria. I pressed the buzzer. We were expected and a trifle awkwardly, trundled in.

I survived!

... tonight. Did I mention I could also smell San Jose. THe good thing is I found 19 stations that have American hows with Spanish subtitles - great for me. I just found CBS, NBC and ABC. San Jose at least coming in seemed dirty, but is hard because it was raining. It is cool right now in my room though. I think it was 72 degrees - but definitly cooler now. Well I think I'm done for now. I need to rest. I am in for an adventure.
