Possibly the smallest hotel room I've stayed in along my Route 66 journey, but by far my favourite. Decorated with Route 66 facts and novelty memorabilia. The quaint buildings make me feel like I'm back in the 1960s, and the Cadillac outside is the icing on the cake.

    Day 42

Visited a Civil War Museum this morning in St Louis. Some excellent artifacts and a great movie presentation on the impact of the Missouri vs Kansas border clashes which preceded the official start of the American Civil War.

Another Awesome day on the road, Three stations and lots of great sites and people on old Route 66.
Today I tried as much as possible to avoid Interstate 44. The old road for the most is great, the infomation centres are fantastic. The people know their stuff and are happy to share, loving this.

The Battle of Wilson's Creek in August 1861 opened the Civil War in Missouri. Pro-union forces, including Germans from the St. Louis and Missouri River area, moved into southwest Missouri and met two pro-Confederate forces in the corn fields and hills around Wilson’s Creek, ten miles from Springfield.  The battle went through several phases and lasted a total of five hours.  The union general was killed and casualties were massive. Both sides felt ...

... My next stop was at the Number 1 tourist attraction in Springfield – the flagship Bass Pro Shop.  This truthfully must be the “Grandaddy of all Outdoor Stores”.  It is huge – directions to the camping section were to go straight ahead through the store to the waterfall, then turn right at the bear and go down the steps.  Three stories of trophy animals, waterfalls, streams, and anything you could possible want in camouflage clothing ...
