On the road again

So my last comment came to bite me on the ass!!! We left keystone in a massive snowstorm and were only very lucky thanks to St Christopher, Spud pulling every single bit of his comprehensive driving skills out and the good grace of about of 1000 drivers behind us as we took over 4 lanes going sideways to get over the last 500 meters of the pass …

... 2.7% foreign transaction fee) and my health insurance card. I love the Oliver Bonas travel organizer (matches the passport cover two dear friends gifted me once) as it fits a ton of stuff, but still super cute and compact enough for my handbags. Since I travel for business, I almost always carry a business card case (this one I picked up in Istanbul a few years ago).

A Day in Chicago

... Chicago. Larry go a guitar pin and then we caught the next trolley. The tour guides were all informative and humorous but this guide not only drove the trolley but she entertained us by singing like Aretha Franklin.

She dropped us off at the Sky Deck at the Willis Tower aka Sears Tower. We went to get in line to go to the top and were told the wait was 1 1/2 hours. We didn't wait. When we got back on the next bus we were told ...

Departure from Chicago

... to you. With LOT, its different. The flight crew will automatically assume you speak Polish. Every time one of them came to serve me, I got asked questions in Polish. It was initially kind of daunting since they spoke quickly with a true Polish accent that I wasn't used to hearing. I felt strange responding to them in my limited Polish but they had understood what I said and usually served me without needing to speak in English.

Fog or Hurricane?

A travel blog entry by costaricamckenn

Bienvenidos a ... the Chicago Airport! After being rearranged for the third time I am routed through Dallas instead of Miami. This was not because of Tropical Storm Isaac, as one might assume, but because of fog at the Cedar Rapids airport! I am scheduled to arrive in Costa Rica at 7:30 (8:30 Central Daylight Saving Time). So, as I wait for my connecting flight I thought I would put some time into the blog.

    Good Value + Free Parking

    from anonymous

Hotel is good value if you are driving as it includes free parking - you can expect to pay $25+ per day at most other downtown hotels.

The room was ok and the staff pleasant enough.

The location is a few blocks from Michigan Avenue so most things are in walking distance. You are also only a few blocks from the subway line.

If I wasn't driving I might be tempted to stay nearer Michigan Avenue.

    Great value for the money!

    from luvstravelling

We stayed here April 4 & 5, 2004. We paid $76.50 per nite with a AAA discount. The room was comfortable, clean, and the hotel is within walking distance to many attraction (including some of Chicago's best Restaurants). We have stayed at several higher-class places on trips past, but feel that the HUGE Hotel savings and FREE PARKING allowed us to spend our money on things we wanted to do rather than where we wanted stay! This is also a great place for families as it has an indoor pool, which was a great way to end the day for our daughters (although cold). We were a little concerned initially about safety as it's several blocks from Michigan Avenue, but actually found the area thriving in the early evening with people and families walking everywhere.Would recommend it and will stay there again!

    OK But Expected More

    from anonymous

Small rooms, confusing directions to the pool, Shower that scalds you every 30 seconds, clogged bathtub drain, treacherous elevators (door crushes you if you don't jump in immediately -- flip the switch as the staff do!). Good location - walked to Water Tower and Cadillac Theater.

Won't be staying there again, though. Worth a couple more bucks for a nicer place, IMHO.

Hmm, not sure about this one...

    from anonymous

My room across car park from reception was freezing and dark, with gloomy lift to my floor. When I saw my colleague's room was cheery and light, and not across the car park, I asked to change! The staff were very happy to move me. In winter, the swimming pool is creepy and reminded me of a rather nasty scene from the movie 'Cat People'....(i.e. very empty...)

    Very clean but skimpy amenities

    from anonymous

Our room was adequate and clean but the decor was less than inspired.

The roomrate was reasonable, especially since it included free parking, but we had to insist on the complimentary breakfasts which were supposed to be included. The best thing about it was that it was conveniently located to walk to Miracle Mile, Art Institute, Merchandise Mart, restaurants, etc.

    Clean but Small

    from luvsumr

Room comparable to price. Small, but clean. Staff seemed nice. BUT beware of using credit card to pay for your room. Someone helped themselves to our card to charge of $129 at a movie theatre somewhere in Lombard, IL a couple of months AFTER our stay in Chicago. Management should know the character of personnel they hire!!!

    Cub's trip

    from anonymous

Have stayed here before with pleasing results. WIthin walking distance of many restaurants of varying taste and price. Walk three blocks to Grand St. Red line stop. A few more blocks to the Magnificent Mile.

Room was small but clean, houskeeping did an excellent job, desk help was courtuous and garage folks were above and beyond what I have experienced in other hotels in Chicago. I will go back there again.

    Good Deal

    from anonymous

I stayed here for one night during the Tall Ships Chicago 2003 festival. The parking attendant was very friendly and informative. The front desk staff was welcoming. I stayed here primarily because of the free parking, but I'll come back again because the staff was so nice.

Short walk to trolley stop and walking distance to almost anything one would need. The room is small, but comfortable. For me, definitely a bargain in Chicago!

    Great Location

    from Boomerone

My husband and I went to Chicago last July for my birthday. We stayed at the River North for it's great location. Since we took the train we had no transportation except for our legs, and an occaional cab. Would recomend this hotel for anyone who wants to see downtown at your own pace. We walked many miles in the four days we were there, but what a great time we had. Hotel staff was friendly, but the room was nothing to write home about. We found ants on our last morning there. It was also resonably priced. (gave us more money to party with!)

    Nice Hotel, Nice Staff

    from Auntie_Pooks

I have stayed at this hotel for a number of years on my annual trip to Chicago. Nice, centralized location. Fair prices. Free parking. Very courteous and amicable staff, and the pizza in the adjacent restaurant/bar, Pizzeria Oro, is very good. The staff in the restaurant/bar is really fun. Be sure to check out the deck by the pool in the motel. You are able to lounge outside with your beverage of choice, and the view of the city is great!
