    Riding the Straight and Narrow

    ... and were ready to ride shortly after 8:30. Skies were clear, but there was a light breeze from the east, so we knew we’d face headwinds again today.

    The road from Gackle rose slightly, so we warmed up quickly. After that we had a view of the longest, straightest stretch of road we have ever seen (hence the "straight and narrow" title - today would be 75 miles of straight east road with only a zig or zag here or ...

    ... still making good time. But we could tell our legs would be tired by the time we found Gackle. At one point we could see in the distance a line of something coming down a hill, but we weren’t sure what is was. Coming closer, we could see it was old machinery purposely arranged to look like animals coming down a trail. The sign nearby read "Dinosaurs on the Prairie", a threshing machine collection.

    The long road home

    ... that we would leave early and have time to do all the fun Ingalls Homestead stuff before dinner, but due to the rain, that was a miss. We stayed in the wagon and uploaded pictures to my laptop, and just relaxed inside.

    I was SO glad we had the wagon and not a tent. Another huge thunderstorm and high wind (with no trees to shelter or block the wind, since... prairie! I barely slept.

    ... rise on the edge of the farm, and in the distance I could see horses pulling a wagon with a driver and a family in it from the barn over to the one room schoolhouse. Beyond that was the prairie, and it was breathtaking. It was starting to get on toward dusk so we scampered to get the car stuff unpacked and into (or under) the covered wagon so we could start dinner.

    ... very nice cafe there as well that not only allowed us to sit on the patio with Nibs but even offered him a dog biscuit.

    We went over to the shop about an hour earlier than they had said to come and the motorhome was ready! We unloaded the rental car and I got things squared away while Bob rode over to the airport with the service manager to return the car. We had wiped all the paw prints off.
