Maribel and Gabe arrived in sticky-hot Portland Monday evening. Aunt Karen and Aun Dawns, while thrilled that they'd arrived were not thrilled with the idea of cooking dinner in 98 degrees, so we all agreed on eating out -- salad and pizza at Vincente's on Hawthorne. ... way, so we knew it would end up being a longer day. The first of these stops was especially for Sophie. The Pacific County Courthouse is not only an interesting legal stop for her lawyerly interests, but designed in the style of the Taj Mahal, which she also loves. It was an extremely grand building in an otherwise quiet, sleepy little town.

... the recent snowstorm which came through earlier in the week dumped quite a bit of snow on Mount Hood – all the way down to the Timberline Lodge, which is quite close to here. He points up to the mountain, and says the Timberline Lodge is, well, where you can see the timber line… hmmm….

... to see Newfoundland and the Canadian Maritime Provinces. The Newfoundland people were incredibly nice, genuine and helpful - the roads not so much. Too many roads - to few taxpayers. The Icebergs, whales and Puffins were fantastic. The viking artifacts and reconstructions were worth the drive. We were able to get major repairs in on the trailer in a town that does not have a gas station for a very reasonable price.
... One of the launch areas (we think C) even offers rentals of canoes, kayaks, and motor powered watercraft. There is also a snack shop at the same launch but it closes early. There is a disc golf course too but I wouldn't recommend it for younger players or beginners, as there are many obstacles. The course goes through a wooded area where there are plenty of places to lose a disc.
