Madrid, Spain and Canary Islands kciarnie... friends on opposing sides). In between these cultural activities I walked kilometres around Madrid visiting the Royal Palace, La Almudena Cathedral, the Debod Temple (a 2nd century BC Egyptian temple relocated to Madrid when the Aswan dam was built on the Nile), and the huge Sunday morning El Rastro flea market. Everywhere there were long lines of people buying tickets for El Gordo de Navidad, the Christmas lottery, which apparently 98% of Spanish play - it had a total of 2.32 billion ...
Madrid, Spain everardt... to greet me? A Madrid cop! All intimidating black uniform, neon green jacket and sleek bike ala Street Hawk (Remember that TV series, anyone?) He greets me first in Spanish and asks me if i felt like giving away 60 Euros! I gape! He asks me again in Spanish, this time, a little irritated why i crossed the road without the pedestrian light turning green! I am still in gape mode but muster the courage to say in American-accented English ...
Madrid, Spain and Canary Islands aratix... there were still people turning up to board at the very last minute and they held the plane for them. Once the Ryanair people were clear, we lined up and were at the head of the queue which quickly started to form behind us. We kept a wary eye out for potential queue jumpers, plenty of people did try and sidle over and see if there was any possibility of getting into the front part of the queue but our fellow queue members insisted that they head back to the end of ...
Madrid, Spain gabilan... make reservations for our trips train rides. Since it was 2 PM I warned my parents that the Metro would be very very packed and to be careful. We arrived at the train station and saw about 100 other people waiting to make reservations as well and decided to leave and come back later. On to the Prado. We spent the afternoon there and were overwhelmed as you always are when trying to fit a few centuries ...
Madrid, Spain avi8tornoleA couple of days visiting my friend Anjara who studies in the capital. Anjara showed me around this huge city, all those sights, the royal palace, the gardens, the main street, the monuments and statues... I can hardly remember all of their names! One evening we went out to meet my friend Celine whom I met during my time at the ...
Madrid, Madrid, Spain and Canary Islands kattiline... statues of mythical figures and animals. The first thing we noticed of the man-made lagoon was that its light green water was dotted on the surface with orange fish, almost motionless. It was hard to tell if they were alive of just resting. In any case, there were little boats all along the lake with people rowing and sunbathing, some reading. Made me wonder what happened to the fish when a hard oar came down on them, as ...
Madrid, Spain zento... Picasso's "Guernica" painting which was amazing. Especially when it was displayed with an entire room of his study sketches and paintings and photographs of the progression of the painting. We finished off the evening with a couple of pitchers of Sangria at a little tapas bar. It was a good way to end our trip. Click here to see some of the city tour pictures Click here to see misc.
