... and tests. All through the movie, at least two laptops were on and students tapped on their keyboards unceasingly. I didn't know what to make of it. I'm not sure if they were working on their assignments (several of them brought school books to movie night) or taking advantage of the wifi to chat with family (the internet at the computer lab was out all weekend). Or perhaps this generation has no concept of how NOT to multitask. Plus adding to the stress ...
Athens, Attica, Greece tiara316... which is the main building and some of the other buildings and stairways. I learned that when the columns are thicker they are male columns and when they are female columns they are thinner because that means they are more feminine. The acropolis is on a hill so you get a pretty good 360 view Athens from up above. We sat on the hill for a while and looked at the view. After the Acropolis we waited for the bus and ...
Athens, Attica, Greece peter148... Unfortunately when your native language is English and you're in a foreign country, things never go the way you plan. Well except maybe the packing clothes part. Hailing a taxi was our first ordeal. We were a group of 5 with 4 girls who packed a little on the heavy side for the trip. I managed to stuff all my belongings into my backpack, but everyone else brought either a large duffel bag, suitcase, or two handbags to carry all their stuff. Taxi drivers are picky ...
Athens, Attica, Greece jhdavis... because there are cute little white adobe homes with blue shutters and pink flowers everywhere you look with the sun setting in the background. Today we plan on heading back to the beach to work on our tans before getting back on the ferry to Athens. We will stay in Athens for a day before heading off to the Pink Palace on the island of Corfu which is world famous for its toga parties! I can't wait! :)
Athens, Attica, Greece abristol... early, and then it was time to find our luggage and for the girls to check in for the Toronto leg of their trip. The girls will be posting about their experiences on Facebook and I'll continue to blog here. We came up with some group memories, though: our favorite hotel of the trip (the Yannaki, unanimous), our favorite meal (lunch at the Xenios Zeus, in the Plaka, the day I took the girls to the Acropolis ...
Athens, Attica, Greece melissagquest... a gorgeous view of Athens at night. Attempted some pictures and then walked around bit before hitting the hay. Monday: attempted to talk our way out of our metro ticket situation...which did not work. Had coffee and real greek doughnuts and then some more coffee. Headed to the airport early so Maggie could get some studying done and then flew home to Nice where, the next day, I caught the now off-strike train back to my humble abode in Italia. And we all lived happily ever after.
Athens, Greece odgersd... hill. It was quite a trek to reach the top, where the rest of the buildings are, but well worth it. First, you are shepherded through the Athena victoy temple thing (ok, I'm so lame that I don't remember what it's called...sorry), and walk the ancient and slippery marble path to the Temple to Athena and the Parthenon. Both are extraordinarily beautiful and fascinating structures, but the Temple to Athena was my favorite. The facade with the virgins holding up the ...
Athens, Greece kalieh7... Middle East and flown to Athens on Saturday morning on a special flight. It is then passed to all the churches and at the stroke of midnight, it is passed to the masses. With chanting in the background, hundreds of Athenians holding candles then head to have a post-Lent dinner. We did a bit of the opposite, and had dinner first (with a lamb being roasted right in front of us), and then went to find a church.
Athens, Greece lizhenning... we had ever been at. It was only 7am in the morning and only a few planes were in, we can't imagine what happens when it gets busier in the day. They do have a new impressive metro system that takes you right from the airport into town, it is quite nice because the majority of it is above ground so you see the scenery as it takes you on the hour ride into the city We were in for a shock, prices had definitely gone up. Last time we were finding cheap hotels for $40 Canadian ...
Athens, Greece audreyandjack... shop. We eventually started to make our way back to the hotel and said goodbye to a few more people. Sandra, Kevin, Big Dave, and myself all agreed to meet up at 5am to ride together to the airport. After sitting around in my room doing some packing, I was feeling a bit ancey. I actually felt like going out to have a drink or dance. I knew there was a club down the street so I went in search of anyone to go with. Rob always seemed like someone down to go out. I went to check ...
