Little Italy

... it's made up -- they had a couple of Italian restaurants along one street and so deemed it Little Italy. Probably very cynical of me. The W Hotel is happening tonight ... some big wine tasting event. Lots of sleek young bodies in high heels and/or tight pants. Both men and women. Very amusing. I definitely felt out of place ...
W and Rice

At work all day, then late afternoon flight. No problems with flight at all ... arrived, got rental car, then drove the few miles to the W Hotel. Very swank. The "living room" bar was happening ... but we just went to our rooms, then met for dinner at Rice, the embedded restaurant, which serves Cuban/Asian fusion. Food was fine, not fab.

Room is fun ... there's a chalkboard (that received a bit of J. Alfred Prufrock from me) and a window seat. And the linens are wonderful.

To the Pacific...

From the Pacific to the Atlantic to where the Pacific meets the Atlantic to the Pacific to the Atlantic and back to the Pacific. Phew! What a ride its been. I am back in Cali (again). Heather picks me up from the airport and we sleep on her new sailboat! First time for everything! I have the best sleep of my life. We get up the next morning and ...

Madness in Michoacan

... a good way to relieve the hangover but once we got out it was absolutely freezing due to the high altitude. Probably the first and only time I've actually felt cold since being in this country.

That evening we returned to have a fiesta in the big house we were staying in. A brief powercut meant that it was a candlelit party for sometime, but the power soon returned and the festivities continued. As it was the only common language between all the different nationalities, I think ...

Day four in Morelia

... on the exterior. As we were working the hired workers were busy putting the finish stucco coat on the interior walls. We worked until we ran out of supplies - Russ and I needed more wire and the paint crew needed more rollers and paint. We headed back to town and met back at the Villa Montana (here is a link - http://www.mexicoboutiquehotels.com/vil lamontana/index.shtml ) We indulged ourselves and sat on the patio and enjoyed a drink. As the host ...

My weekend in Mochoacan

... the back was open, so was the courtyard so the place was filled with pigeons (dirty palomas). It was so funny because we went in the front and found the decapitated guy and the poorly painted (red) dummy. But when we walked in the back we were lambasted by pigeons and shrieked. Oh man. That was the best 25 pesos i ever spent. Okay, I realy do have to go. I gotta put some pics in here. Not much going on this week. Studying, going to the orphanage, then Puerto Vallarta this weekend. Chau!!

Marking Time In Léon and Morelia

... Valladolid grew rich on deposits of gold and copper from the surrounding hills and in time it came to supplant Pátzcuaro as capital of the state. After independence the city was renamed Morelia, in honour of its native son, Jose Maria Morelos y Pavon, a guerrilla leader who was executed by the Spanish. The city sits at an altitude of some nineteen hundred metres in a broad valley enclosed by volcanic hills covered in pine forests. Its colonial heart has been preserved almost ...

Day 6: Brawley, CA to Salome, AZ

... us to the exit for Brenda, the first in a series of dusty roadside hamlets hardly big enough to warrant a name. From Brenda, we headed east across the Renegras Plain, through the town of Hope, home of "The Little Church of Hope," and a farewell billboard announcing "You are now beyond Hope." Shortly thereafter, we entered Harcuvar, a town comprised of nothing more than a quarter mile stretch of RV parks. The Renegras Plain, home to these tiny ...

Visit to Michoacan and the Monarchs

... winter home and to realize that the butteflies we are seeing are the sixth or seventh generation descendants of those who were here last year and find this spot through some genetic code. When they leave in the spring they will live long enough to get into the states but then breed and die in Texas and then it will be another six generations as they return north to begin the whole process again. It is very hard to capture the scene without a telephoto lens and tripod.
