Corvalis to Florence

Had yummy breakfast rolls before hitting the road. We stopped at a grocery store and got some fruit and COFFEE. It was raining on the way to Newport but cleared up and we ended up having great weather all day. We went to the Undersea Gardens in Newport and had clam chowder at Mo's. Newport's cool. It's got lots of murals, but they're all of …

Another day along the pacific coast

... We did a bit of beachcombing and saw quite a few rocks with fossilized shells. (Guess all that education in Drumheller has finally paid off.)

Then we packed up Star and we continued driving along the Pacific Coast. Our first stop was Devils Churn. This is another basalt rock formation formed by the waves. A narrow split in the rock funnels the waves to the cliff, causing the water to be forced up like a geyser. Next we stopped at the Spouting ...

The rest of the day was trying to contend with the pelting rain, for 6 hours! Finally had to stop as it was getting dangerous.Had a great Thai dinner and packed it ...

... sea stars, urchins and snails and chitons and limpets... we were both pretty happy cats. Jonas found a giant snail trying to eat some seaweed (which is way more entertaining than it sounds), and I looked for octopus hiding in the rocks. The waves crashed on the rocks and we had a time a few scrambles between sets....luckily nobody got soaked.

After another delicious PB&J bagel lunch, we set out on a long hike. After climbing for what felt like hours, we started ...

Hope you enjoy the pictures as much as I enjoyed taking them!

Historical Traveler Reviews BEST WESTERN PLUS Pier Point Inn Florence

    Disagree with past reviews

    from anonymous

My husband and I ate dinner at the Pier Point Inn in March of 2004, and found it to be excellent. The service was great, the view awesome, and the food was outstanding. Obviously other people had read your reviews because there was hardly anybody there. The chef came out and talked to us and the two other couples in the restaurant. We liked it so much we are going back next weekend. I'll let you know how it was.

    Flea Bag of a Hotel

    from anonymous

Our room smelled old and musty. The carpet was filthy and sticky. Our mattresses had dark stains on the sides from something spilled. We had no towels in the room. The bathroom had some kind of water leaking on the floor. You had to hold the door a special way to get the key card to work. It did have a wonderful view of the river - but I would not recommend staying at this hotel.

    Dirty, Smelly, expensive

    from anonymous

This Best Western was a disastor. We were on a 2 week trip and have stayed at other Best Western's, such as the one at Agate Beach near Newport Oregon. These other ones were quite good, but the Pier Point was disgusting. Dirty, smelly, mouldy, damp rooms, pool was slimy, didn't eat at the restaurant as we were advised not to by other guests, and finally, the breakfast was limited to be polite. To end this, the price was almost $50/night more than any other BW that we stayed at. Avoid this BW at all costs.

    Dinner

    from anonymous

We were visiting Florence 4/14/04 and decided to have dinner at the Best Western. It was VERY disappointing! THe salad was drenched in dressing, the potatoes were problaly left over from breakfast, the asparagus were so over cooked, the salmon was tasteless, the crab topping was hard and chewy. The view was beautiful, but not worth the $120 cost of dinner for four.

The worst "Best" Western you could imagine

    from anonymous

Take my advice - Avoid this place at all costs! Damp rooms, no bed sheets, moldy bathrooms, dangerous electrical outlets(in a family room), holes in front door, missing interior doors, and a staff that couldn't care less will greet you at this "hotel(?)". Other guests agreed that this was the worst hotel they had stayed at. Had always previously been impressed with Best Westerns. Steer Clear!

    Great View, 60's hotel.

    from anonymous

Visited in Jan. 2004 - King with frig and micro, bed like a brick, soiled carpet in lobby, room smell; unidentifiable. Breakfast, poor, definately not a perk. Great view of Florence and the bridge from the balcony.

    Do not stay here

    from anonymous

We really expected better from Best Western. The only redeeming quality about this motel was the view. The rooms (we had two) were filthy. The fixtures were beaten up and nasty. We had NO towels in our room and had to walk to the front desk to fetch them. The front desk clerk was rude, informed us that all they had were bath towels and no washcloths etc. with quite a bit of attitude. The bed was the worst thing. Almost like sleeping on two rocks. We could hear a large dog in a room close by. I thought their policy was no large pets? We actually had dinner in the dining room. (bigger mistake) This had to be the worst meal I ve ever had. Very expensive, but every item was undercooked or just nasty. The server sighed, twisted her hair, and made faces when my son asked what kind of sodas they had. She was rude throughout the meal which would have been better tossed into the river. They were only 2 other tables with customers, but we had to wait 10 minutes to be seated, 10 minutes to have our drink order taken and another 10 to get water and have our food order taken. My husband had food poisoning from the lobster. It s been two weeks and we are still feeling sick from staying there. We will stay at a Comfort Inn or Marriott from now on.

    This place is old

    from anonymous

We stayed here during August 2003, the place was old, the bed was hard as a rock. The restaurant was so-so service, but the food was actually good, great prime rib. My wife complained every minute about this place. For $141/night, I should expect a little newer place. I would not stay here again.

    Disappointing Hotel with good view

    from anonymous

With a Best Western, you expect a certain level of accomodations. The place was out-dated, dirty, and generally despressing. Staff was nearly non-existent so you felt strangely alone. The only high-light was the room had a nice view of the river.

    OK but very strange place

    from Albuquerque_NMGeezer

View across river is lovely. Rooms are large. Bathroom fixtures not well maintained. They use old worn key cards that make opening doors a task. Staff is almost too flakey to believe. In lounge no matter how many times you order something (even with no other customers) waiter will not even remember that he took an order after walking back too station. Desk staff smiles like Stepford wives, says "thank you", and doesn't even notice anything you say.

Very strange place but a decent place to sleep at a decent price just don't eat there or expect the slightest service.
