It's Time

... when I had begun to feel a part of the neighborhood…it’s time to leave

Just when Catalina and I can have a full conversation and I know what is going on, I can handle myself at the bank and the store I know what Juan Rafael across the street is sort of talking about, I can ask the bus driver where the bus is going and I can order at Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and KFC

Just when I was learning to say so many new things ...

The unmarked house on the street with no name

... that was a wooden thing with a sock thing and the product was a great thing.

She had gone out to get fresh bread and cut up fresh mangoes. (So I am allergic to mangoes…despite what my husband asserts. My face swells, my throat gets close to closing and in general it is not fun. ) I had to pass on the mango, but she cut me some papaya and I almost chipped my tooth on the bowl scarfing it down. The bread was soft and she had guava jam. GUAVA JAM ...

Mission work -Day one

... br>This year's team has been blessed by a very loving and welcoming spirit at both churches. As per the usual, the girls loved arts and crafts, while the boys tended to enjoy Noah's recreation time, everyone loved the music. As expected it rained by the team's best efforts it didn't affect the program or morale. Leaders report that the team's enthusiasm was tremendous throughout the day. The "Chiky-cha dance ...

Monteverde Weekend - Amazing but still in Pain

... all talked about the weekend because my homestay sister Carissa had a trip with her school too and my tica sister had her baby shower so we had lots to talk about – but by 10p I went to bed because I was so tired.

I really enjoyed coming back and talking to my host family because we all goof around and us girls are about the same age and we just have a fun time. It’s a lot of fun – they’re not my real sisters but it’s like ...

Do You Know The Way To San Jose?

... barely made it. Doug and I arrived at the check-in line and, as he looked at his watch, the Spirit employee monitoring the line notified us that we would be the last people he accepted for the flight. As Doug frantically & repetitively dialed our cousin´s cellphone, I explained to the guy that we had a third party joining us and that he´d told us he was in the parking lot & was headed towards check-in. My cousin didn´t answer, so we ...

My visit to Puerto Viejo and Bambu

... really not what I am used to, no this is totally different. This school was small, there is not much for the children. Especially in this area it is important to make it pleasant for children to go to school, to make sure they keep on learning. I read the positive and amazing stories from the volunteers who volunteered in this school and I can really imagine that you can have a great time here. The children are so sweet and so welcoming. The weather was ...

Christmas and New year

... to catch the ducks with our bare hands, later we tried with a box and we succeeded! Then we took it's picture and let it go. This afternoon I got to feed a baby sheep with a bottle. Her name is Taja just like my friend. We had to find her in the pasture , then we called her name and she came bounding up, bleeting. She was thirsty, she drank almost the whole bottle. Tonight we had fried Yucca and green beans, and my mom's red pepper humous with carrot sticks. For ...

La Tortuga Feliz (The Happy Turtle)

... silt out of the canal dock, looking after the horse etc. Only 4 hours a day and the rest of the time was our own for volley ball, kayaking, swimming (beach - too many caimen in the canal), monkey spotting (howler and spider), games and walks along the beach to each end of the island and serious hammock time. 3 meals a day and if you were hungry inbetween, go and grab a coconut and whack it open with a machete and dig out the flesh or grab a peeper (green coconuts of a ...

Que Lindo!

... stray dogs, though not quite as many as I saw in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. It's not always easy to tell which dogs are strays, because pets are seldom collared or leashed, and many aren't even neutered. There is a much more casual attitude toward feeding and petting strange dogs, allowing pets to roam free, and bringing them to bars and restaurants. I know of no animal control service. Therefore, I imagine, the line between "pet" and "stray" may be less ...

Bienvenido a San Jose

... was right downtown, the food was great (and there was tons of it for about $5 US). Afterwards 5 of us went to the Dahlee, a casino nightclub FULL of Costa Rican prostitutes. All of their "clients" were like 70 year old gross white men. It was quite the spot. We only stayed for an hour or so playing roulette then came back to the hotel and crashed!
