... wonderful nature and quick mind. He has been a great help to Ryan in communications with builders and suppliers and just about everybody else in the village who doesn´t speak English, which by my calculations is everyone bar three, two of those three can´t speak any language after 11pm.

There have been certain construction issues largely due to a long employment line of alcoholic builders, in fact, in the few ...
Párnica, Žilinský, Slovakia jimmymacfadIt took all morning to pack up the tent and wash and dry Eartha's sleeping bag. The Hungarian campers helped with packing the tent, having been entertained for the past few days by the children. The kids had been putting on bagaboo (hand puppet) shows for them. Whilst we packed, Saskia and Eartha spent an hour washing up the breakfast things, pretending to be Saggy Grandmothers i.e. Little Daft Old Ladies. It was very funny.

It took an hour to get out of Zakopane, due to the tourist ...
Martin, Zilina, Slovakia rachelkw... was not only wonderful but carefully chosen.

Caught the train up to Parnica in the north and to the beginning of my cycle mission. The bike was laden onto the train and stripped of all my belongings so I could struggle down the corridor and knock into people. No seat, so I occupied the corridor and stared out of the window with that intent curiosity which befalls you in ...
Párnica, Žilinský, Slovakia jimmymacfad... most of the people playing knew the game well enough that we didn´t have to know how to read the cards. The second day there happened to be my birthday, and it was really fun. We took a trip up to Donovaly, which is a ski resort. We didn´t spend a lot of time there, because there wasn´t a whole lot to do. We took a different road back, and Miki decided to show us a "shortcut ...
Motyčky, Žilinský, Slovakia nickbuchtaNot much to say about this place. Our Penzion was on an industrial site (really). Very weird set up and our visas caused much consternation until an English speaking woman was summoned to confirm what we had been trying to get across for about 5 minutes - i.e. that we were from the UK. Oh dear. Only reason for coming here was because it was a base for our day trip to Cicmany and we had to change here for onward travel to the Vratna Valley. Cicmany is famous for its ...
Zilina, Zilina, Slovakia samandgarthToday we took the train half way to Kosice (our next stop) and are staying in Zilina which is in the mountains on the train route. It is a very beautiful city, I'm afraid, however, that it is too far from a major airport :( Oh well. It could be a nice place for guests to visit!
Zilina, Zilina, Slovakia astarkGot up at 8am and after breakfast walked down to Obchodna and caught a tram up to the main train station. Caught the 9.30am train to Trencin. Arrived in Trencin from Bratislava at 11.30am after a slow train trip. Walked into the town centre past the Piarist Church and the Town Gate and had lunch from a small sandwich shop in the main square. Walked up to Trencin Castle and took in the ...
Trencin, Slovakia tyga... on at around 4 o'clock, everyone is soaked with sweat from dancing and full to the brim with alcohol and the never-ending supply of food. Part of the buffet feast is a great big pig, garnished with all sorts of trimmings. By the time we leave, the only part of the pig remaining is the head. Ryan, one of the Aussie guys, quietly picks it up, wraps it in a few napkins and hides it in a plastic bag. He then ...
Bojnice, Slovakia jambo... the first major peak (Suchy) before it got hot. Just a shame I couldn't see anything. The path I chose took me along the major ridge of mountains in the range, taking in the two highest peaks along the way. Shortly after leaving Suchy, the cloud began to lift and strange, sentinel like rock formations suddenly began to appear out of the murk. About twenty minutes in, and the sun finally appeared and I could see Maly Krivan, the second highest peak, in the distance. There were ...
Vrutky / Mala Fatra, Slovakia mrconfused... We have phoned one of the cheaper hotels in the city, because the place doesn't seem to have youth hostels. We have a tripple room booked, we just need to find the hotel. When we walk out of the station, a man starts talking to us in Slovakian. He's really friendly, but doesn't seem to understand that we don ...
